This arrived yesterday, courtesy of my daughter who is a Virgin Atlantic hostie and has just had a Cuba trip, not sure how many Cuban pesos she said but it worked out at £15.25 for the bottle, good value I think.
Apparently the lady in the rum shop was very emphatic, no cook, no cook, just drink.

Daughter, wife and new kitchen in the background.
Just finished a bottle of this, disguised as mojitos. It’s not bad.

Excellent news, I think I shall have to test it this evening.

One of my favourite readily available rums.

I'm not a rum fan but by coincidence my son and I have just got back from Austria where we got through a half bottle of Stroh 80%.

Jesus!! I know what to use if I run out of brake cleaner in the garage now.

But, actually, not too bad when mixed with ginger beer.

I remember a family holiday to Austria when I was only just about old enough to get away with sneaking a few schnapps. My dad had the Stroh 80 one night in a restaurant after dinner. He was game for most stuff, but didn't have a high opinion of that. Paint stripper IIRC, was how he described it. laugh

me and a mate managed to drink all the stroh80 in a pub in talinn one night, the barman was astonished. he told us its mainly used for making jams etc. so they can boil it yet still retain a bid of alcohol content. not sure if true but would explain how fking awful it is.

Added this one to the collection. The 2002 wasn’t a patch on the 2000 but this has been getting good reviews.

Flying to St Lucia tomorrow. Any top tips? I’ve had St Lucian rum before, but it must have been forgettable, as I can’t remember which ones (but all from the St Lucia distillery)

Favourites are generally:
El Dorado 15
English Harbour 10
Zaya

More than tolerable
Diplomatico RE
Zacapa 23

Also partial to something a bit different like the Foursquare port cask or even the Stiggins fancy. Prefer to drink neat and not a big fan of spiced rums or rhum agricole (although the Haitian stuff that smells like paint stripper is surprisingly drinkable).

A couple of new ones procured from Drinkmonger in Pitlochry.

Plantation Stiggins Pineapple is very nice. Obviously flavoured and sweetened but not to the extent of stuff like Bumbu or Don Papa. @ £35 for a fancy rum it's probably on for collectors or pineapple obsessives!

Interesting.

I’ve never been a rum drinker at all but we were at a fancy hotel at the weekend and I braved an Old Fashioned off the cocktail menu with this pineapple rum, orange bitters and sugar. Not going to lie, it was incredible. If it wasn’t bloody expensive I would have drunk the bar out of it!

Now I can’t get on board with the current Gin trend, I’ve had to sack off wine, ciders my go to drink but sometimes a pint just won’t cut it. So I’m thinking Rum could be my new grown up drink.

Slight issue is i don’t do Coke so any drinking suggestions or purchase suggestions that aren’t going to break the bank to ‘get started’ so to speak?

The Stiggins isn‘t expensive if you want to make the old fashioned at home. Sounds interesting, I might have to try it myself.

I drink too much coke, but I don‘t like it with rum particularly. Everyone has their own concept of what breaking the bank means wink My recommendations for sipping rum in descending order of price and preference are El Dorado 15 (it‘s the pick of the age ranges in my opinion), Diplomatico Exclusiva Reserva, Flor de Cana 7 yo (again pick of the ages for me and very near the bottom of the price range). All available from Master of Malt. Zacapa 23 is very well marketed and a lot of people‘s entry into premium rums. It‘s nice enough, but at a similar price to the El Dorado, I‘d take the latter every day.

To answer my own question... I had a few of the Admiral Rodney special rums, but honestly wasn‘t that impressed with any of them over anything I‘ve had before. The biggest revelation was Nutz n Rum which was a peanut/rum version of Baileys. Great drink, but I fear bad for the waistline!

Couple more new ones, unopened as yet as I’ve given up drinking for a bit.

Centenario 25 and a limited Trinidad release from Plantation.

I am getting to be quite a fan of spiced rum. Kraken was ok, Dead Mans Fingers is better, can anyone recommend a step up from these?

What would be a good premium spiced rum to try?

Dead mans fingers is fantastic! I am just making my way through a bottle of Pussers Gunpowder proof, bloody hell it is good and lethal to boot!

Rumbullion is very good. I'm a big fan of the XO.

I quite like red leg as a mixer rum, their pineapple one tastes like pineapple cube sweets which is an interesting sipper.

Ron De Jeremy Spiced is very agreeable, especially if you pick it up for a good price.

Plantation "Stiggins" Pineapple is sublime.

Bumbu seems to the fans favourite whenever I host a tasting for non rum drinkers.

Couple to try there hopefully!

I've started to get into funky Jamaican rums lately and added a couple more to the pile thanks to gift voucher.

Worthy Park Single Estate - Good funk levels but not overpowering. Lots of interesting stuff going on.
Hampden Great House - Still not sure if I'm actually enjoying this! It's always got an alcoholic hit no matter how much ice you put it on and is aggressively funky.
Smith & Cross - the first funky rum I tried and still my favourite.
Mezan XO - very quaffable, like a more refined Smith & Cross.
and Mount Gay for cocktails!

If you're a fan of the heavy/funky Jamaican rums you might want to try the 3yo from whiskybroker.

Old J spiced is very good, and if you want to quickly lose the ability to feel feelings try old j tiki fire, that stuff is strong but still weirdly drinkable, intact quite pleasant with a diet or sugar free mixer.

Red leg and sailor Jerries also good but probably not classed as premium. As too is ALDI's own label stuff.

My current favourite is Bayou spiced rum, very nice indeed, tends to be more spiced flavour than overpowering sweetness and very smooth.

I really got into rum after going to the leeds rum festival last year. As many "samples" from like 50 different suppliers as you like. I was completely stfaced within 90 minutes. Best 19 quid I ever spent.
