Can I just ask, with the more quality rums in the thread, do the owners generally sup them neat? I'm into whisky and as a rule I have those with a tiny splash of water usually.

Thanks
Rum neat, preferably accompanied by some good quality chocolate.
Whisky with a few drops of water to open it up and a few more if it is cask strength.

i guess many parallels with other spirits in that it's a mark of a good rum if you are able to or keen to take it neat. If you can't, it's generally ste.

Drinking cupboard currently has...

Appleton 21 yo
Mount Gay - Pot Still
Ron Jeremy XO
Plantation Barbados 5 yo
Mount Gay Eclipse
Diplimatico Reserve
El Dorado 12 yo
Nicholas Abbey 12 yo

Used for a mix of home made rum punch, diesels and just good old fashion sipping.

We just got a bottle of El Dorado 12 yo...very different to the El Dorado 15 yo we have.

Can't finish the 15 yo as my dad bought it for me years ago and don't want to empty the bottle frown

Oh yes, it is *that* Ron Jeremy. It is way too sweet, something like 93mg/l of added sugar but I use it as the sacrificial drop when mates comes round (always gets a laugh and means I can stick to the good stuff!). It’s not horrendous and mixed with cola is just like all the others - think holiday rum.

Not opened the 12 yet, interested to compare it to the 15 although it’s been a long while since I had some.

The two bottles of Appleton 21 are because one has a dram left after my father and I drank it before my wedding and I cannot bring myself to finish it.

What are the differences between the two. Have been contemplating a bottle of 15 but have not had chance to sample.
the one local place that lists it never has it in stock.

12yr is my firm favourite so hoping the 15 yr was more of the same, just better!

Note bottle of 15 year old Ron Abuelo on the bonnet. It a good off-road expedition rum.

Have just ordered some more Zacapa Centenario. Finished a Negra off over the weekend so need more stock. Almost went for the Appleton 21 but something put me off.

I adore the Appleton 21, for the money it’s hard to beat.

There is a bottle of 30 in my fathers cupboard that I’ll accidentally open day.

And the 21 is different again. 15 is by far my favourite out of the El Dorado range.

I've had a bottle of it before, likewise... good for mixing and with mates round.

Very sweet... bit of a salty finish though...

Just found this thread after joining and am a bit of a rum lover myself. Started off on the Eldorado years back soon realised the 12 is the pick of that range but even so the added sugar and glycerine has become more noticeable to me the more i drink it.

I have become somewhat evangelical about pure Bajan rum in the way Richard Seale describes it https://rumauctioneer.com/news/moment-foursquares-...

The first time I had a non filtered rum it was as though i'd had a layer of wax removed from my palate.

I still drink some other stuff, particularly when friends are round but Foursquare/Doorlys are my go to.

The current rum section of the drinks cabinet :-)

I'm the same - hence my affinity with Mount Gay. Yet to try the new XO, but recently picked up a bottle of Eclipse for mixed drinks.

I've almost polished off my Rum-Bar white rum. It's sort of nice but at the same time not so much. It packs so much flavour and intensity that it completely overpowers any mixers. That flavour is nice, but when mixed it just becomes odd. And I'm not into drinking young white rum neat.

Picked up antoher Goslings black seal, first use for in our home made mincemeat mix. I've not had it for a while and forgot how enjoyable it was.

Eyeing up what to get for the Xmas period for sipping. It'll probably be Bajan for the reasons above - Doorly's is one of hte few I've not yet tried to any great extent so probably will give them a go. Tempted to try some more of the Mezan range as well - they're produce some great pure rums.

Has anyone spotted any real hidden gems for dark/golden mixing rums? I thinking supermarket own brands or the like...
