Just your standard Americanisms. "Can I bring a bottle of this back to Delaware?" Etc. One guy was also trying to explain that he thought "top shelf" referred to how high a whisky barrel was stored in the warehouse. confused

Next day we went to Distillerie Damoiseau which was only 20 mins from where we are staying. They're the largest Rhum agricole distillery in Guadeloupe and you if you order a ti' punch there's a good chance it will be this. They've got these giant vats and a bunch of old steam engine parts lying around the lawns.

We didn't do a tour so had to settle for a long range look at the distillery and a taste. And a t-shirt from the gift shop. biggrin

The whole reason I've dragged my wife and friends to Guadeloupe is because I heard an interview with a guy on RumCast who had visited loads of distilleries around the world. They asked him where his favourite place to drink rum was and he said it was on a beach the island of Marie Galante off Guadeloupe - good enough for me!

Marie Galante is 60 square miles, 10'000 souls and 3 Rhum distilleries. There's a ferry there and back every day but you then had to rent a car and it was all getting hard, so we signed up to a tour (€105 a head). We left at 8:30 on our powerboat and arrived 50 mins and slightly queasy to the island.

We did a tour of the island at glacial pace (an island off an island means it was island time x 2). The guides spoke thick Creole French so even the French people on our tour were having a hard time translating for us. We ended up at Bellevue (pronounced Bellvie). Their label features one of the 100 windmills on Marie Galante.

They're the 2nd biggest distillery in Guadeloupe and modernized in the early 2000s to be much more water efficient and carbon neutral.

Another old steam engine in the back too.

The tasting was pretty good but we had a group behind us so we had to make speed. Lovely rhum! We bought a small bottle and another t-shirt.

From there onto our beach BBQ. There was a 1L bottle of Montebello that needed seeing to and nobody else seemed to be in the mood, so I had a few 'ti punch and finished it off. It's an amazing place and mission accomplished!

This was my haul for the trip - the Bologne was completed with punches and cocktails at home but the rest are in the bag.

The one distillery I failed to have any rum of was Papa Rouyo (I think it's the newest and smallest distillery on the island). We spent yesterday afternoon in the marina visiting all the bars and asking but nope. Today we had lunch, went to the zoo (fantastic, definitely go if you're here) and then visited the town where Papa Rouyo is distilled and drank at a locals bar down at the port - they'd never heard of it either. We struck out at duty free, which had every other brand on the island!! We'll have to come back. hehe

There was a little bar airside that was selling some nice rhum. Sadly the people:seat ratio was around 2:1 so here's my Bologne Black Cane in a paper cup, sat on the ground. biggrin

Chaps - rum seems so much less well documented than it's Whisky peers. I'm looking for a sipping rum, probably golden, to act as the ambassador for Rum at 'festive drinks' tasting event next week. It'l sit alongside some scotch, some bourbon, some cognac, and maybe even a gin (or anything else i can think of) as part of a festive spirits selection.

Sadly the likelihood of me researching a good option in the time i have is slim. Any suggestions? Budget <£150. If it's under £100 i'll buy two bottles.

Hoping for something better than a Zacapa 23, but without paying for silly chintzy bottles from the big names.

Not sure I’ve heard of sipping gin before, but for the rum you can spend way less than your budget and get excellent quality.

Mount Gay XO is amongst the better of the more mainstream offerings, but if you're after something more serious then personally I'd be seeking out a little less well known. Bajan rums tend to be more pure i.e. with no artificial colourings or sweeteners, and Foursquare are one to check out.

Mezan was one of my favourite offerings for a pure rum though - and they do a few expressions from different areas, be it Jamaica, Guyana etc. Easily up there with many of the best single malts for me.

Yes. hehe It's more like a liqueur, really. Has a very high amount of added sugar.

sipping gin? yeah, there's some gin liquors (sloe, or winter spiced stuff) but it's not really the spirit it's just a gin based sweet liquor.

for rums - yeah, ideally not the big brands.

This is pretty much spot on! biggrin Most of the supermarket stuff is going to be adulterated with sugar, spices or glycerine, or it will taste like vodka (i.e. Bacardi). My theoretical £150 for a tasting would go to:

Doorly's 12 Year Old for an easy gateway for whisk[e]y drinkers - this is from the Foursquare distillery referenced above and is going to be delicious. But anything from them is great:

https://www.masterofmalt.com/rum/doorlys/doorlys-1...

Mezan Jamaica XO is a great example of a different style of rum and a great example of Jamaican rums. It's got loads of tropical fruit but is still really approachable, unlike some Jamaican rums which can be overwhelming to the uninitiated. Get it with two free glasses and on sale:

https://www.masterofmalt.com/rum/mezan/mezan-jamai...

And the UK is making some really high quality rum. A couple of us really rate J.G. Gow (despite the slightly cheesy Pirate themes) - Sy on here likes it so much he bought a cask recently:

Actually, on the subject of serious tasting, I recently signed up to RumX to keep track of rums I've tried and what I thought about them. Is anyone else on there?

The scores on there are kinda useless for me as the liqueur rums seem to be scored quite highly, but the community tasting notes are quite good to get your brain going.

Not heard of that - will check it out, as I forget what I've had half the time!

Will also check out JG Gow. I've got a bottle of Doorly's lined up for Xmas, but spotted last night Brugal's new releases. So I've put a word out for the first which is the cacao roasted barrel rum. Sounds intriguing.

I still have my Angostura 1748 in the cupboard, which is possibly the most serious rum I've ever had. Not something I can put away much of, but nice to have a glass of on a miserable evening.

Yeah - the former will definitely put hairs on your chest hehe

I keep meaning to try the latter but keep seeming to end up with something else.

This is my wheelhouse! I've went into the £100-150 price range as it gives you a change to showcase something really well crafted. The 3 below would be what I'd levitate to in my collection for this task, they're all excellent rums and should appeal to any spirits drinker.

El Dorado 21
Diplomatico SBV (Probably a 2007 at the moment but you may find a 2005)
Black Tot Master Blenders Reserve (Any of the releases or even the 50th Anniversary release)

I'd take El Dorado 12 year old over the 15, but that's just my preference.

I haven't seen Zaya for sale in the UK and my bottle came from a trip to New York some time ago and I'm eeking it out! Likewise English Harbour 10 year old. We have 5 year old from a number of places in the UK but not the 10. Are you in the US?

I really miss the old Trinidadian 10 Cane, anybody else hanker after a rum not produced any more?

Yes, individual preferences are just that. smile I prefer the 15 over the 12 or the 21. Similarly, I prefer Flor de Cana 7 to any other age.

I'm not in the US, but I think I may have tried the Zaya and English Harbour for the first time in Key West. I was able to buy both of them where I live in Switzerland. Before I posted I checked Master of Malt and they had the English Harbour 10 in stock, as well as the 5. They didn't have Zaya though. I normally get the El Dorado delivered from MoM, as for some reason it's far cheaper than here.

This should set the Cat amongst the Pigeons; for an easy weekend drink I'm actually quite partial to OVD!

Trouble is that now around my part of the World (East Sussex), it seems to have gone AWOL, so I'm drinking Woods 100 as a general snifter.

I was at a Plantation tasting last week. Xamayca is my fav.

Of interest the rep confirmed the name change is happening in January, wouldn’t tell us the new name though other than it’s not Plant Nation.
