Blues Smokehouse in Bracknell is pretty good although I've only been there once (am very likely to go back again though).

Decent beer selection, which is a shame I usually drive into Bracknell

The American Diner style of cooking is something you don't seem to get here. You sometimes see placed done up like a diner but they're just a greasy spoon cafe or a bar which is disappointing.

My missus and I love cooking that type of food and we'd like to open a proper diner here if we were able to get the funds and location.

I thought it was good, reasonably priced too. Grease burger, chips and a coke for less than £13, about what you'd pay at an upmarket burger place these days.

Looks interesting.

I was thinking of less wagon/pre-fab ones and more.. you know, proper buildings, but that works too.

I found this one all the way down in Essex
http://bigmoesdiner.co.uk/
But on streetview it's a Frankie&Benny's
The diner must be new. It's the closed down building that has the 'drive thru' sign on it that used to be a Burger King.
That picture is a diner in Universal Studios ,Florida

I don't know of any in the midlands.

Years ago when I used to work in Bishopsgate in London, before Spitalfields got revamped I used to enjoy going to Fatboys Diner for lunch. Looks like it's been relocated now. I wish there was something the same as it in the midlands. lick

I remember seeing Fatboy’s in Spitalfields years ago.
Checking out its new location online, between Canary Wharf and City Airport, it must be a fabulous place if it gets much patronage.
I can’t imagine that many people come across it by accident, it looked so far off the beaten track as to be virtually non existent.
According to Google maps, it’s 19 minutes by car from my house, I’ll check it one day, just to see if it’s worth schlepping through Rotherhithe Tunnel for ersatz blueberry pie.

Hickory's Smokehouse is coming to Worcester
I went to the one in Chester a few years ago was very disappointed. Maybe it was just a bad day? I was looking forward to it but never went back.

There is a BBQ restaurant in Nantwich called Deadwood Smokehouse. I have only been once so far but the food was very good.

If you set up near reading I and Mrs skinny will definitely support you - love proper authentic decent American diner food, never found anything that comes close over here. UK bbq / smokehouses can't seem to get it right either.

We have seen every episode of triple D and also man v food - and on our last trip out too the states pretty much hit one place of the shows each day, and some really amazing food.

Its all boring chains around here.

As far as chains go Bodeans take some beating if you're in the Smoke (der-ching). Tried burnt ends, truly amazing. Luckily a good one just opened here in Shrewsbury,Old Smokey on Mardol. They do special offers on various nights during the week as well.

Better than the Smoke Stop just out of town on the Welshpool Rd,not sure I'd bother with that again.

7 Bone burger takes some beating. Mostly southern areas at the moment. Nice to see a privately owned business doing well. Cant go wrong with anything on the menu, but the onion straws and frickles are great sides. Saying that the Poutine fries are to die for with the brisket gravy.

Another vote for 7 Bone being awesome, but I wouldn't call it "American Diner" style. Its the same kind of upmarket burger that you get a lot around the UK, similar to Honest Burger, Byrons and GBK (but a lot better than Byrons and GBK). That aside, it's well worth a visit to a 7 Bone if there's one near you. I've almost committed to a 20 mile round trip to Camberley just for that.

5 Guys is closer to an American diner at least in terms of decor, but it's basically a copy of 5 Guys from the US, they're good but expensive. It seems when they bought the menus over they just swapped $ signs for £ signs without adjusting the prices.

And where is the burger thread... I've just found there is a 7 Bone and Honest in Reading.

I like Hickory's and was very happy when it opened in Coventry, but it isn't a diner...

I went to this in its new location a while back, I didn't realise somewhere could be so in the middle of nowhere in London. The food was good though!

Me and some from work have basically tried every burger place in reading over the last few months. Honest x2, handmade burger co, 7bone, brewdog, 5guys, bluegrass bbq, and the oakford tonight. Honest is the best of these, 7 bone next. 5 guys next especially taking into account VFM. handmade probably the worst. Oakford not great but 2for1 on Tues

I remember (and this also harks back to the original post) going occasionally to one (I might have been the original) near the Ronnie Scotts in Birmingham back in the late 1980s for their milkshakes. It burnt down though - I think it was actual a cooking fire that caused it to happen.

Thanks for the recommendations... Shame it's a PITA for me to get into Reading town centre for lunch... I want a burger now.

I remember Honest from the short time I lived down the road from one in London, bloody brilliant, the rosemary chips were excellent.
