Picked this up on Saturday for tonight’s dinner. 500g ribeye.
I usually like the longer aged stuff (40+ days) but they were all on the bone and too big for my pan (as I learnt last time when I got my pan smoking hot and then realised my steak wouldn’t fit and had to hack at the bone while my pan smoked out the kitchen) so this is 35 days.
Going to reverse sear, in the oven till 48c, then 45 seconds each side in a hot hot pan.

Chaps, the Meater + is £65 on amazon right now as it is 'Prime Day'. Should I shell out on it or is there a more cost effective solution that is recommended?

I ask, as I'm going to reverse sear a 1.5kg rib of beef on Wednesday but abs finish on the bbq, but don't want to get it wrong. Also, toys and future steak perfection etc.

I've got one and think it's pretty awesome, so I'd say go for it! Always fun having new gadgets.

I don't use the same butcher all the time but I went into one of them the other day and they had a 'beef cave' newly installed with cuts up to 3 months aged, I've seen a lot of these In French supermarkets but not at home, one thing they have in common is there are no prices on the cuts that are offered, maybe an 'if you have to ask you can't afford it' type of situation, anyway I'm going to take the plunge the next time I'm there.

I have ordered one. I'd only just ordered a wired one as the Meater was too much. But with the discount I went for it.

Will be good to be able to check the temp without opening the oven/bbq.

My Meater+ is terrible. Connected via Wifi and STILL have to open the oven and hold the charger near the probe to get it to connect and give me a reading.

Anyone else have the same issue? It's been this way for over a year (since i got it) and i've just sort of accepted that it isn't very good / reliable. Disconnects all the time if used in the oven (not so bad on the BBQ but still not great). I wonder if it's the triple layered oven door blocking the signal?

Obviously no good for rotisserie but my Webber iGrill mini works great on my BBQ. The transmitter is located outside the lid.

Mine is fine but I usually just leave my iPad next to the oven when it’s in use with the app open. Sometimes my phone disconnects but my iPad doesn’t apart from once but that was when I didn’t have the app open and was watching SkyGo whilst sat in the kitchen waiting for my steak to cook biggrin

Sounds like yours may be faulty, I’d report it to them. I love mine, really handy gadget.

I think some ovens do block the signal sadly. You need a second Iphone/device with the meater app as close to the probe as possible, which will then send the signal to your phone as long as you're on the same wifi.

I had this issue and found I had to slide the spare phone UNDER the oven to get it to connect. I've not yet tried it with my new ovens, bit worried I'll have this issue with no way around it.

Hold up, it’s BT to the phone, then shared on the WiFi? That’s not clear in the add. I thought it’d go straight into WiFi… balls

What type of oven do you have? I’ve used it at my sisters house and she has Siemens and had no connection issues. My Neff seems fine as well, I am going to be doing a steak tomorrow if I can finish work at a reasonable time, so I will do it just with the phone and see how it goes.

Yeah I remember thinking it wasn't entirely clear either, but after some reading and having the usual old iphone in a drawer somewhere it works pretty well as long as you remember to have the old one charged and ready to go, but I agree it doesn't seem ideal that you do need this second device to really get the most out of the ability to check on the cook from anywhere in your house.

Currently got a couple of new Neffs, just not had them long enough to actually cook anything that needed the Meater. Good to know yours is ok though, that's reassuring.

Ffs, it’s not clear at all. I’ve just looked and you either need a 2nd device or a meater block.

Hopefully it’ll work to my phone on the other side of the patio.

It suddenly doesn’t seem as good as I thought ☹️

Oh, yeah, that Meater block, forgot about that. So yeah, you have two options, but neither of them is ideal, you would have thought it should work without needing the pricier block or another phone.

There are other options out there with probes wired to the base unit which is Wi-Fi, rather than wireless to the base unit.

Wired probes haven't caused any challenges for me on the BBQ. I sometimes do v long cooks up to 18hr say for a big stubborn pork shoulder and I'd be worried about the battery life of the probes.

I can understand for an oven but I have an inbuilt wireless probe there wink.

Have to confess I can't see how these work in a modern insulated oven.

What I want is a wired one so that the main unit is outside the oven, like my Inkbird, but where the main unit uses WiFi, not Bluetooth...

...and after looking I see that Inkbird now do a wifi version, that is also on sale for Prime Day. Added bonus that it comes with 4 probes, so dead useful for different pieces of meat.

I have the bluetooth one and it is truly excellent but for the fact that Bluetooth range to the phone is rubbish, and alarms start going off if you leave the room. Wifi version should sort that out.

Ordered.
