a follow on from the steak shot above. Seared 2 mins on both top/bottom. 1 min on the ends. Applied some English mustard. Placed in the oven on 190 for 9 mins. Rested for 5 mins. It was exceptional. Peppercorn sauce. Portobello mushrooms. Thick chips.

The money shot is half of it. The fillet was about 460g in total

Anyone tried the M&S £3.50 steaks? I've enjoyed a few rumps, really good quality for the price. Went all our for tonight and have purchased a sirloin for £4.50!

Last weeks rump
We buy the twin Fillet packs(M&S). £12 for 2 x 150g Aberdeen Angus. Quality is on point and it's a big enough portion. It's 2 mins a side in a very hot cast iron pan. Mushrooms and roasted sweet potato . Im keen to try the Sirloin

The fillet at waitrose is(was) garbage and at £60/kg a complete non starter for such poor quality. That fillet above was £25 for 460g(not cheap) but from the Butcher, best meat I've ever had. Sussex grass fed. It literally melts in your mouth.

He say chips, why'd he mean peas? And whats wrong with my peas?!

This is the sirloin from M&S, and a better photo of my chips and peas rolleyes

nothing, your food looks delcious smile we cook potatoes like that too, and they are very nice (though works much better with floury ones rather than waxy ones, I find).

I was just extending the joke (at least it was in my head) that if the potatoes were considered weird looking chips then the green things were definitely very weird looking chips.

I must need a parrot!

I usually use up old 'new potatoes' that I have left over. But anything will do! Bit of oil and salt, bloody love them.

I think it was just the first photo they looked a little odd. I also use new potatoes when doing a roast.

That looks utterly delicious but to me that is nicely cooked roast beef not steak.

Considering how steak if easy to cook ( it's no beef wellington is it where you have to juggle a lot of things?) it's surprisingly hard to get right.

The reason for this is because we all like it cooked "as we like it" . Imagine going to a standard steak place and when they ask how would you like it cooked you say "As I like it". The waitress and chef, either short order and 20 or 45 and more upmarket "maitre a la steak de maison" will wish you said "As it comes"

Very few times over the years I have ordered a steak and been totally happy. Smith and Wollensky in NY did it ok and the next best after that in the UK was actually a fish restaurant in Margate called Rocksalt. Their steak was actually dry aged and cooked to the requested amount.

Considering steaks over here are so expensive now they have to get it right.

I have not been to the top London NY style locations, I assume they get it right? What's your pick.

Best steak ever?
Worst steak ever?

Let us know.

Worst ever steak was at a very reputable pub local to me, people rave about it. It was a first date, and I had steak, it was so bad I couldn't eat it, made for some laughs with me removing food subtly! She offered me half her pizza and it led to the best steak I've had pictured below! (we've been back and most people seem to leave their steak!)

Again a local place, but they just churn these out, pretty much every table has them.

I've done London places like Hawksmoor a few times but not as good as above. Maybe it was an off day.

I've been to Peter Luger in NY. It was good but I've had better. No better than Goucho. Goodmans has always been consistently good. I had a chateau in Prague years ago. The full works, waiters in tailcoats, silver service. That was top drawer. To be honest the above steak was as good as the best I've ever had and the Wellington I did a while back was probably even better. Same steak source

Awesome - thanks. Venturing into Oxford Saturday actually.

My girlfriend used to live down Magdalen Road, when I lived in Headington. Spent many happy years around Headington and Cowley.

Have you been to Red Star and Bodrum Kebab on Cowley Road?

Back when I used to eat steak, I recall getting one in AMerica once, I mean, I' probably had a few good ones there, but this one stands out, can't recall where or when, but the memory of the steak stays, it was so soft, it almost dissolved in my mouth. I recall thinking how amazing it was at the time (and subconsciously comparing the sawdust placemats labelled as steak that 'd had in the UK), i just shut everything out, table chat and waffle across the restaurant and just zoned in on the nirvana repast I had going on in me, when it ended I was sad, and then I was sad for all the times I'd had steak that weren't this, that should have been labelled as doortrimmings. I was probably already sad that I couldn't eat another one straight away.
Can't recall any meal recently that came close, apart from the swankiest place in New Orleans one year ago when I had soft shelled crab for the first time....it was amazing!!!!!!

Probably just my juvenile mind, but as a blue collar Londoner,
“enjoyed a few rumps” and “last weeks rump” had me ROFL.
Although aside from the undesirable looking chips/chunks, the
food looked okay, but could’ve benefited from blue cheese sauce.

Defo go, lovely pub! The steak meal will feed over 2, we usually just forget the chips and nail all the steak!

Never really ventured into that side of town so no, I lived in north Oxford, recently moved out of town but still work in the centre. Just hassle to go the south & east of Oxford, but it's always worth the cab money to visit Magdalen arms!

If you want a good burger or Pizza, get to Rickety press in Jericho, hands down the best of each in Oxford.

hehe Didn't even spot it when I typed it. You'd not expect a lot for £3.50! Actually I might just pass...

The chips are good, just look a little crap.
