My steak recipe - the ingredients are very cheap but the method is rather pricey:

  • Fly to South Africa.
  • Go to Pick 'n Pay, buy two 900g Porterhouse for £4.50 each and wood. And beer.
  • With beer in hand, use all your wood and make a fire.

  • While wood burns down to coal, drink beer and stare at nyala and grumpy hippo.

  • Cook steak, rest steak, slice steak.

Good choice re. Goodman's City. I used to be a frequent visitor and rated it very highly, but I've not been for well over a year or so now - I'd be interested to hear if it's still keeping up its standards.
Number2 ... “a picture says a thousand words”

Goodmans at Canary Wharf - was bloody lovely (400g filet, Yorkshire grass fed cattle)

I’ll be honest and say we were a bit worse for wear - but still thoroughly enjoyed it.

South African reared steak is awesome and so cheap over there. I eat steak a few times a week when over there

South African steak is the best I’ve had. Hussar Grill in Camps Bay yumlick

I’ve tried for many years to get as good in England without success...

South African steak is brilliant

Last time I was here I’d have it every other meal, for the two of us (inc. wine) the bill was never more than £25 or so (last there during the week they fired two finance ministers).

Still think my best ever steak was over there - big cut of springbok at Roca in Franschoek.

The ostrich steaks in Oudsthorn and even the “cheaper” beef steaks in MonteCasino were great and never more than £5 or so...

Do, not just food but the experience - just about the best meal out I’ve ever had

They give you two tables - one overlooking the valley outside for pre-drinks/starter before sunset and another inside (if you want it) for mains/dessert

Only place I’ve ever been that a dinner reservation meant 2 tables...wine is from their vineyard, good and cheap too!

ETA - lunch at La Petite Firme (and their tour/tasting) is top notch too...for the sake of the stomach maybe a different day however!!!

Finally tried Flat Iron (took a photo but too dark). It was pretty bloody good and you couldn't even tell it was flank steak as it was so tender and soft. The only issue is the size! There's no way you can get full up on one steak frown

online pic but looked exactly the same.
Looks great

We need more skirt and flank on here. Tricky to cook, but can be worthwhile, I am still rather haphazard with it to be honest due to lack of practice with these cuts, we tend to get over excited by other cuts and "amount of marbelling",etc

Rather than A la man we might need A la difference just to expand horizons,

Cheers, looking forward to it.

Been to La Petite Ferme on many occasions and love it too. We just never make it far enough up the hill past Cape Chamonix to get to Dieu Donne and Roca!

In London next week and will try and get in at Flat Iron again. The standard steak is never enough so I always order the special too!

Skirt, flat iron, bavette etc are great cooked directly on lumpwood charcoal (dirty style).

I went about 6 weeks ago and it was really good. Usually go to the one in Mayfair but enjoyed City too.

It was for a client lunch and we racked up an impressive £1,500 bill between 8 of us.

The butchery that supplies my favourite burger place (Bleecker Street) has just opened a shop in spitalfields, whereas previously they were out of reach in the deepest darkest depths of SE23 south of the river.

Went along and picked up a good, dry-aged steak. Has been hung since September, and I have the end piece, including the funky side... and was under £10 as well, which is amazing considering how long it’s been aged, and also the quality of the cows that they start with. Will let you know how it cooks on Thursday! Thanks The Butchery E1

And it was good. The ageing really gave it such a deeper flavour, and some of the fat just melted into liquid as soon as it hit the pan. 85 days, worth it.
