Best afternoon tea in London?

I've been to London this week and had afternoon tea at the Mandarin Oriental. More specifically in their Rosebery Room. It was lovely and was a treat for my mum. Good sandwiches, nice warm scones and lots of cakes. Nice and relaxed service too. The kicker for a greedy bugger like me was the opportunity to have more sandwiches and scones when you'd finished your first lot.

So, any other good experiences for afternoon tea in central London?

Yep, but you get 3 hours I think which is plenty.

We were given a voucher for afternoon tea at Claridges a couple of years ago.

Contrary to my expectations that it would be a waste of money I was actually quite impressed and bought a voicher for a friend's wedding anniversary.

Not cheap, but an enjoyable experience for a special ocassion.

Best value is wolseley cream tea

Fortnum and mason and Harrods were both fail in my opinion. Looking forward to trying claridges or Berkeley soon

My Mrs swears by the Mandarin.

I've been to the Savoy with her which was very pleasant and you could eat as much as you wanted (would recommend it but she reckons Mandarin's better....

Afternoon tea is to be enjoyed by her and her mum though. I'd rather spend the afternoon in a pub

My wife and I were lucky enough to spend our 10th anniversary at the Dorchester a few years ago - 'twas lovely. The afternoon tea really was something to behold, and they gave us a free room upgrade to a suite. Almost worth getting married for.

My experience is very limited, but I liked Dean Street Townhouse.
Very comfy and homely setting, not stuffy or overbearing service at all.

Love to the Dorchester afternoon tea and try to make it an anuual event.

Only had 1 bad experience there in regards to service - when they presented the bill which included their discretionary 12.5 % service charge I asked for that element to be removed and explained my reasons. The manager came back and personally apologised and waived the whole bill ( even though I said I am willing to pay the normal bill).

Try and book the balcony and its like your own private viewing deck where you can people watch.

Had a lovely one at Harrods for my Grandparent's anniversary two years ago - limitless sandwiches (no crusts!) and amazing pastries.

I wasn't keen on the Ritz - seemed very rushed and the staff weren't all that polite (plus, you have to wear a jacket for the duration, which when sat down in a warm room wasn't very comfortable!)

Fortnum & Mason however was excellent!

Fortnum & Mason have been excellent (especially with dietary requirements) and we're booked to go back later this year
