I'd be tempted by one of these, but having just added a keg to my basket just to see the costs, it's £43.89 with delivery, putting it over £4 per pint?! Surely that's just not worth it? Or am I doing it wrong?

It's best to wait until the kegs that you want are on the multi-buy discount as you'll get 10%off and it will be free delivery as you'll be spending over £50,

They'll come and collect the kegs from you and you'll get £5 off your next order for each one.

It's still not a cheap way of home drinking though.

There is a German site (bier-wien.de) that is much cheaper, but they have a limited range and delivery is quite expensive (you have to buy four from there to maximise the deal IIRC).

There used to be a 15% off discount code for buying multiples of 3 but it was withdrawn recently. They now send you a personal code for the discount if you have bought 12 kegs in the previous 12 months. You could be getting 15% off the kegs plus beer tokens for every pound you spend then £5 back for each returned keg.

Thanks for the response. Sounds like a case of “it’s cheaper than a pint in the pub but the most expensive way to drink at home” sort of thing. Still tempted though

It's definitely more expensive than just buying a case of cans/bottles, but the beer from it is pub quality. Brilliant pint.

And here’s me grumbling that my usual keg in the local supermarket has recently gone above €20…

OK, so after just over five years of 24/7 operation and at least 4 or 5 kegs whistle it seems my PD machine has conked out.

Came in last night and the display was flashing and the temp was ambient. Good thing that the keg was just about empty anyway.

The maintenance manual is available online but I haven't had time to do a debug. It's inevitably the peltier element anyway so I speculatively looked one out. Places are quoting €60-80 for the part...hmmm

Of course it's an off-the-shelf part so looking at the specs (40x40 mm, 12 V, 6 A) I found it for sale locally for a tenner. Much better!

We'll see if this resurrects it when I get some time to strip it down in the next few days.

The machines have gone up in price a bit in five years, even the stock of old Philips machines seem to be closer to €300 now than the €200-odd they usually were when I got mine, and the new Pro models are nearer €400 RRP, which is chunky.

Pick a preowned one up from marketplace for about £80-90.

Yeah, that's an option too, but just as likely to break again. Confident the new element will fix it

Most Costco stores will have them in stock for about £190 or so brand new, and Costco's warranty is pretty good as well.

I recently sent mine back to Philips for repair, it was a flat £50 fee

OK, it is resurrected

Assumed it was the peltier so replaced that (£10), that still didn’t work so followed the debug instructions on the service manual which pointed to the pump not running, removed the power board and sure enough; three blown caps.

Replaced them (£1!) and all good.

In fact, better than before because applied new thermal paste, the old stuff had dried out. There can’t be many PerfectDrafts running with Noctua silver paste cool

Just entering the world of Perfectdraft

I've got friends who have them so I know roughly what they are about

Managed to pick up a less than 1 year old Perfectdraft Pro machine on Facespace for £50

Waiting for a few kegs to arrive now!

Lowenbrau and Stella for me normally, the Stella is nothing like we get in pubs here and obviously it's quite rare to find Lowenbrau anywhere in the UK, so no need for a comparison.
