For a decent largish coffee I make a "Long Black" by pouring a small-lungo of water (no capsule) followed by a medium-espresso of coffee.

This is like an Americano but preserves the crema.

(I have the KitchenAid machine which has 3 sizes each of espresso and lungo selectable with a turny dial)

I like at least half a cup of coffee-

Have programmed the lungo to have an extra long shot- from what I recall our machine will allow you to program a hot upto 300ml.

Have used all sorts of oridinal capsules but non- lungo as well for the last three years and never had an issue with doing long shots - of course some tast better than others but I’m no coffee connisueur.

Also just to add, don’t be tempted to run all capsules on lingo setting , can reduce the life of the machine and cause leakage
Anything to back that up? Sounds...implausible.

Had my first machine for about 10 years, must've made hundreds of lungos, was still working perfectly when I sold it.

I would be interested to know the rationale behind this too.

Impressed with Nespresso customer service. My machine is leaking. They have collected it and given me a loan machine till mine is repaired/replaced.

Loan machine is just a basic one with no milk function but does a job.

Also need to sort out selling a Inissia I got for £40 for the club credit

Happened to a good friend of mine , they used lungo setting on all capsules and in communication with customer services they suggested doing this reduces the life of the machine and can cause leaks - it was leaking - Higher pressures used on a ristretto etc for a considerable longer time than in the ristretto setting .

By the same logic we should only drive half way to work and walk the rest of the way to extend the life of our vehicles smile

Having worked in many customer service environments I'd take that with a big pinch of 'say something to get rid of them without explicitly admitting liability'-flavoured salt.

Zero about minimising use of lungos in any of the Nespresso machine manuals I've got. Given that the machines and pods are specced by Nescafe they'd have a pretty hard time justifying why a machine couldn't be reliably be expected to work when used with their own pods.

Non-Nespresso pods are a different story and I can quite easily see why continued use of them might cause excessive backpressure & leaks as, in my experience, they are generally poor in quality compared to the official ones.

I've used Fine Coffee Club, not bad at all.

My preference is Cafepod, their Supercharger and Livewire work well for me.

Volume is my main gripe with the Nespresso too. Granted I’m using a basic Innisia machine that was purchased by an ex senior staff member to decorate his office.

I went to the local Nespresso shop last week and purchased 3 different pods - Arpeggio, Livanto and Ciocattino. I’m very much a big mug of coffee kind of person and having tried the two presses of lungo on the same capsules approach for all 3 pods I’m left feeling underwhelmed.

Thankfully I have other options - aeropress, french press, Bravilor filter machine and a Turkish coffee pot thing for when I want a proper hit to keep me awake.

Use the 11 or 12 rated pods. I find these better for a mug full.

You can program the cup size on most of the machines, including, I think, the Inissia. Check the manual.

There is limited scope with the amount of coffee in the pods though, but you can definitely get another 10-20 ml out of them without too much bother, more can get bitter and 'thin' tasting. Use the beefier capsules though.

I'm really enjoying the compatible stuff from Aldi at the moment, and they seem to be the most reliable compatibles, bar L'or, to date!

Yep. They're simply not designed for "big mug of coffee" people. They're designed for us wot are civilized hehe

Either you can use two capsules, or another brand of machine. Nespresso is designed for espresso and slightly larger coffees. For that, they're amazing!

I make a long black when I'm after something with a bit more volume, hot water first and then drop in a Lungo or two.

I've ordered some coffee pods from colonna: https://colonnacoffee.com/products/capsules-rare

I want to know if you can recycle these with the Nespresso recycling system? They seem to be a mix of plastic and aluminium and I can't seem to find anything on the Nespresso website about mixing other pods with their recycling system.
