Was up in Edinburgh for a wedding... but found time to pop into Glenkinchie for a tour.
Glad we picked up 2, as the first one didn't make it out of Scotland
We did the experience tour, which officially included...
- Glenkinchie 12 year old
- Glenkinchie Distillers Edition (double matured)
- Glenkinchie Distillery Only Bottling (double matured)
- A smoky whisky (will be decided on the day)
- Single Cask 2001 (cask strength) - drawn on the day
- Single Cask 1988 (cask strength) - drawn on the day
The 2001 is actually from an inactive cask, so that was a new one on me. Quite a few other drams appeared as well! Nice little place, really friendly, and thoroughly smashed by 14:00
Sounds a good visit with a lot of different samples! Was that the standard tour, or did you go for one that was a bit more 'advanced'?Glad we picked up 2, as the first one didn't make it out of Scotland

Decided to open this tonight, without knowing much about it. Almost all of it is still undrunk and back in the bottle. It's clearly sherry on the nose, which should have been good. But it's got some soap on the nose, and then when drinking it then it's just soap and more soap. First time I have come across the soapy whisky issue, and can understand it now!
I had to have some Ardbeg Kelpie to remove the taste, although I have a suspicion one member here will wonder how that was supposed to help things,
I had a full bottle of this about 20yrs ago, and it definitely wasn't soapy - you might have had a bad one. It was actually a damn good whisky.I had to have some Ardbeg Kelpie to remove the taste, although I have a suspicion one member here will wonder how that was supposed to help things,
I've experience the same thing before with a bottle of Edradour, which was poured down the sink. I blamed a bad cork/seal on the bottle, as it wasn't soapy when first opened.

Interesting! From what I have seen there is a few different full sized bottles from 1966, all with pretty good reviews. However they might well be different casks used compared to this one. It seems some of the bottles from Glenturret have this issue, as it has been described in several different ones such as a 1967 version etc. Edradour also seems to have issues with some of their bottles. Interesting to hear your example changed with time. From what I'd read the soap flavour was thought to be a result of something when making the whisky rather than interaction with air. Bowmore famously had an issue in the 1980's with it with what was called FWP.I've experience the same thing before with a bottle of Edradour, which was poured down the sink. They even do a shuttle bus to Edinburgh, so no excuse not to go.
I'll be flying into Edinburgh next Thursday! I'd actually been planning to go to Springbank later on the trip as I will be heading over in that direction anyway, but could be good to do both!

FWP?
French we Perfume! It's more of a lavender soap though, so not sure it is the exact same thing. I think in Bowmore's case a lot of bottles were claimed to have it that didn't (people just didn't like the whisky they were tasting), which muddies the water as to what actually caused it. It seems like it might be related to batches - but there doesn't seem to be a clear answer online for what causes a strong soapy taste in a whisky.http://whiskyscience.blogspot.no/2011/06/lavender-...

I bought the Aberlour A' Bunadh Batch 56 last Christmas it's way too strong for me, but at a whopping 61.2%, what could I expect. I've tried it with a little water and although that over powering bite's been taken away I'm left with a bland taste. It's so disappointing as I love Aberlour.Bought the Aberlour 16 yr old tonight.....................now that's more to my liking

As someone who likes peaty/smokey whisky, I was somewhat underwhelmed by this. After reading many, often high-praise, reviews I was expecting more, well, peat & smoke.
Having said that, I do have a yet to be opened bottle of Lagavulin's Distillers Edition.
