Hi all

Appreciate this is “show your whisky” , but I’ve just came back from the new Macallan distillery. I’ll watch my P&Q’s here - but how disappointing indeed.

Whilst our tour guide was fantastic , I was expecting a lot greater. You could clearly see that Macallan had spunked £140million (£40million over budget) on iPad’s, lights and some shinny 3D models for the tour to play with, but the whole thing felt like a sausage chain - in, out and move on.

Whilst we only paid £12 per person, 3 x 12yr old and “rare cask” to taste at the end doesn’t cut it for me Macallan. Oh and wanting £675 quid a NIP for a mac40 is taking the absolute piss (£17,500 for a bottle aye)....

Bloody whinging jock.... wink

Sounds pretty disappointing to be fair. My view is that they’re all brand and very little substance.

Tours are largely very similar in my experience so you have to look for the personal touches. Lefty sorted something out for me and Mrs P a few years ago at GlenGlassaugh but the world has changed since.

Aberlour’s “casks from the past” is worthwhile and actually GlenKinchie’s effort is pretty good as well. If you’re doing one tour, then Balvenie has it all.

Aberlour have now 'unveiled' the new Casg Annamh, even though it was actually available (albeit not that readily) a few months ago. Still not showing on their own website though, nor in stock at any of the big online retailers. Odd.

https://scotchwhisky.com/magazine/latest-news/2017...
Not seen it anywhere either apart from Amazon at £59.90 + £17.00!!!!!!!!!! delivery!!
I asked them when it will be available, and they said "Casg Annamh will be available at local retailers in the coming months. However, if you are planning on doing some international travel soon, Casg Annamh is currently available in Duty Free stores."

So it looks like they're slotting this into the gap left by the A'bunadh comedy price increase.

Good to know. I am considering dropping by in a few weeks as mentioned. Always guessed it might be just getting you through the distillery ASAP due to it being so big now. How much is the special distillery single cask (exceptional cask series for the distillery only) in the bar?

The thing is they can have substance, but it's normally so expensive you might as well get it elsewhere instead. The Edition bottlings are the best value at the moment from them.

You should have been there last night/this morning for the Macallan Genesis release.

That would put you off Macallan for life.

Complete loss of control of the situation.

The rules Macallan stated were out the window. No parking on the road was ignored. The road finally had to be closed which put pay to their plans of whoever got to the gates first in their car would be first in. Crazy.

When the road was closed everyone was told to walk up. Hundreds did to then be told when the gates opened that you would only get in if you had a car.

This lead to what you will see posted below with people trying to get other to pay them for a seat to get into the distillery

£495 per bottle and they only had 360 for sale. They are now on sites between £3,000 to £5,000.

Nice if you could be bothered getting one but it seems the days of drinking a Macallan is getting less and less.

Crazy laugh

No went up at 8 am as Macallan stated it was first car to the gates.

When I got there is was just crazy and the police then went to close the road so I just got back in the car and left.

Just as I was leaving a gentleman was taken away in a ambulance with a suspected heart attack while walking up the road.

Have seen some crazy scenes before but this was a new level.

I'll be there next week and was disappointed to just miss out on possibly getting one. However it sounds like a great thing that I wasn't there considering all that! Sounds insanity.

Flippers on various FB whisky groups asking £3k for them already. Madness.

I do like to pick up a few cheapies, spotted these three, Grants and Famous Grouse cask editions £16.50 each, and Black Bottle £15.

Basically had to sleep in your car all night to get one. Some got early in the morning but were lucky.

Some contractor who work at Macallan were taken out of the queue as none of the staff were allowed to purchase.

Was shocked to hear that one.

BTW if you are heading up and you don't have a Macallan Edition 4 it would be worth getting if they have any.

Macallan are £82 a bottle and most retailers are double that.

I think even collectors would be tempted if you paid £495 and someone offered you £3k.

Whether they are selling at that prices is another matter.

There are five in one auction and after only starting today they are already up at £1500.

It's all hyped up just now so prices might fall smile

the only reason these people go through all that to secure a bottle of that whisky is to make money. No one, or almost no one gives a st about drinking it. It's pretty sad, but I guess all the best known brands are like this.

Yep, if you are not going to drink and savour it I don't see the point, sad if you think otherwise imho.

To be fair I doubt there are many people who can afford a £495 bottle of Whisky to drink.

Anything in this bracket are more a collector piece.

When a bottle is £495 and it's in auctions already for around £2000 with over week to go then it is only going to get worse.

Macallan will be loving the attention.

I suppose it is like someone buying a limited edition car and leaving it in a climate controlled storage unit.

But even a new limited numbered supercar could be flipped for a massive profit.

If people want it and have the money it will sell.

they may well be loving the attention but TBH they will absolutely know they're just part of the bullst cycle. Companies that love what they do and put care into their product wouldn't advocate speculation, just like any half-decent recording artist wouldn't advocate ticket touts. It's not wrong, just sad that they'd promote this type of thing and 'price out' normal people and enthusiasts.

Absolutely. I'd do the same, but I can't see that paying £3k for a NAS whisky is a wise move, no matter what the label, how limited the run, or how fancy the packaging. Whether I'm right or not, time will tell I guess!

The trouble is that crazy prices on the 'halo' products drags up the prices for the more regular releases, which is bad news for someone like me with a real world budget who buys whisky to drink.
