Can anyone kindly suggest a decent bottle of whisky in the £75-100 price bracket as a gift?

TIA smile
A nice bottle of Lagavulin 16 can be had for less than £50 and is easy to get hold of.

If you can get it delivered in time:

Thoughts on this anyone? I bought it in Edinburgh in 2012 or 2013 from, I think, Royal Mile Whiskies, and for whatever reason I've never opened it. My cabinet is full so I'm thinking of thinning it out a bit to make room for Christmas purchases biggrin, so wondered whether to sell or keep it. Don't say drink it, because I've already got plenty open, and a few that I'm looking forward to opening! It's quite rare, being one of 708 bottles. The 19 yo and 20yo come up for sale quite often, but not the 17. Don't get me wrong, it's not very valuable and it wasn't expensive when i bought it, but is it worth hanging on to?

Imperial is not a very well known distillery, most of it's product went into blends, but there certainly won't be any more, because the distillery was demolished in 2013 and a new one (Dalmunach) built in its place.

Ripping the absolutely out of it so they are. Was this not £60 up at the distillery when the rest of the "Easter" one's came out?

Yep, surely this can't last can it?

The basic 12s are all £60 now. Anyway, just for sts and giggles, I have entered the ballot as there is no obligation to buy. If I am lucky(!) enough to 'win', is this one to buy and flip at the next auction? Any profits could be erm, 'reinvested' in whisky to actually drink! Winner winner, or too much 'bite you in the arse' potential?? scratchchin

Get it flipped if you can mate. Every Tom, Dick & Harry is doing it now.

I can’t believe its £750 quid for a NAS whisky. fk off Macallan you bunch of cocks.

It’s like when Bowmore Devil Cask came out. 1 was £55 and 2 was £60 (from memory) they then saw the boom so charged £150 for a 3 and said it was a NAS (!) when 1 & 2 was a 10 years old. The whisky industry is going in a direction that I am beginning to resent - massively.

I'd be worried to buy this one to just make money flipping. But then again I thought the same about the Genesis, and just look at the price of that! What I'd be worried about is it seems to be the Rare Cask Black, just stuck in a bottle with a number written on it in terms of bottles for sale. That Black was around £3-400 and they have been sitting around so could be risky now. Also with the price I assume around 0 will be drunk, so the supply will not decrease.

I was also shocked when Glenrothes came out with their 25yo "standard" release a few weeks ago. £375! Then it made complete sense when I remembered they were bought back by Edrington. So presumably they're going to do the same and completely take the **** there too now over time.

Yes, I agree about the industry. I'm being very selective in distilleries I buy from now for the most part as a result.

I'll see if I get a chance to buy it first, then decide. It certainly wouldn't be for keeping, that's for sure.

i know what you mean about the way prices are going, I was bloody annoyed when Aberlour doubled the price on the Abunadh, but it does look like Macallan are head and shoulders above everyone else with their crazy prices, especially with NAS stuff. There are still good whiskies that can be bought for sensible money though, Glenglassaugh and Glendronach are putting some good stuff out in the £50 - £80 range. I wouldn't touch any Macallan in that price range, the 12s are decidedly 'meh'.

I think surely that Macallan will lose out long term if the quality/value diminishes the value of the brand, it's not like we're talking low volume production here.

Macallan have somehow done an amazing job economically. Increase production massively, yet also manage to massively inflate their special bottles. The only thing I have even considered was the Edition bottles though, everything else has better options for the money. And got an 18yo to share with friends while comparing with a IB version.

Interestingly Billy Walker didn't want to sell, but "had to" due to the other two owners. He mentioned Glenglassaugh specifically being kinda unfinished business, as he was not able to get it where he wanted (I presume a mature range, older single casks of his own spirit etc is what he meant)

The only other Glenglassaugh I've had is the Revival and it was very pleasant, I'm a big Islay fan as I'm sure you've noticed with my constant promotion of Kilchoman, I recently opened my bottle of Lagavulin I treated myself to, it's been a while since I had a bottle and I must say it's changed quite a bit from when I used to drink it regularly, less phenol, slightly less seaweed but sweeter and rich, still peaty/smokey but I'd say a little less raw, still one of my all time favourites, I won't stop trying to convert you!!!! smile

Look a the difference between a Glenfarclas 25 and a Macallan 25.

I picked up a Glenfarclas 25 for £89 in Costco (fantastic whisky). You're about £1,500 for a Mac25 rolleyeslaugh
