Not sure, but they have no idea what's the correct way to drink whisky, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lh-OxEPgilQ

Nice video - 2 different ways and both open, but having your own opinions too. Almost just seems to be a different drinking culture in a way. Perhaps one is more about focusing on the whisky and getting as much as you can from it. The other is more just enjoying a drink while relaxing? Also of course people have their own taste/ smell etc.
Also I wouldn't "worry" about all the random notes many throw out in tastings and not getting them. I find there is a few main flavours that most get, then other things are much more subjective and depends on the day. Also depends a lot of experience as to what you might call the same flavour, what you have experience smelling etc. And probably how much experience you have of a certain type of whisky - if you have a lot of the same type then you will notice small differences more and so focus on them instead of say typical raisins in sherry or vanilla in bourbon matured whisky that most would pick up on.
On thing I found made a difference to smell is the usual swirl the whisky in the glass. But then tilt the glass until the whisky is almost level with the lip of the glass, and smell from the top downwards, or the bottom upwards. It (to me) does seem to make a different to picking out more flavours, with the heavier ones at the bottom. Might be worth a try (but you look silly)!

Just has a nip of that Macallan Edition 4, not a bad nip at all.
What, you mean someone opened a Macallan?? Actually, I finished off a bottle of Mac 12yo Sherry Oak last weekend, it was better than I remembered. Has anyone tried Glenmorangie Signet before? It's a bit pricey (for me anyway), but although a NAS, it gets very good reviews and supposedly contains some 30 & 40yo. The tasting notes seem right up my street.

It was a bit disappointing for me - but I also had high expectations of it from tasting notes etc. Probably had expectations too high so from there it's a let down. Nice enough, but not really very different like I expected.Has anyone tried Glenmorangie Signet before? My whisky collection has got seriously depleted over the last year or so - I am now planning to start building it back up before Christmas. Was in Costco earlier, and noticed they had Laphroaig Lore - I'm a fan of Laphroaig but hadn't seen that before, so couldn't resist - although it's a tad more expensive at £65 a bottle.
I'll be sampling it this evening.

I am also a big fan of Laphroaig and Lore is the best expression I have tried.. I'll be sampling it this evening.
When the bottle runs dry I am not sure I would buy it again though as I think that the Quater cask is almost as good!

They’ve also got a Glenfarclas 25 for 84 if my memory serves me correctly - fantastic dram for a fantastic price . I'll be sampling it this evening.

I saw Aldi have there Christmas Reserve in store, any one tried it?
Inver House apparently...
I got 1 bottle of the Glen Marnoch Distillers Reserver (1988) on Tuesday night (they were putting them out ready for Wednesdays official launch, but happily sold it) and opened it and tasted it Tuesday night. Much better than last years(which I really didn't rate), but not quite as good as the year before that(which I thought was very good for the price). I wouldn’t rush back for another but would not be upset to pick one up discounted to <£40Inver House apparently...
One thing I would say, is that tasting it immediately after pouring is disappointing. Best leave it for Ralfy's "a minute in the glass for a year in the cask" and it takes on a whole new life.

Well, I opened this last night to try. Hmm. On the nose, very promising, with dried fruit, toffee, some green apple, but the taste left me very underwhelmed. Quite a lot of alcohol burn to me at least, and I ended up adding more water than I normally would for a 46% abv to tame it. It seemed quite spirit driven, as if it was a young whisky, and although adding the water improved it, I was disappointed. Maybe it needs to breathe more, and hopefully it will improve as I get further down the bottle, but I wouldn't recommend it based on this tasting. Pretty one dimensional, which reminded me a bit of Dalmore 15, and that's never a good thing.Gassing Station | Food, Drink & Restaurants | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
