Happy New Year to all. New Year's resolution; buy fewer bottles of whisky this year.
How did it go in the last few days? Manage to not buy anything at the auctions?I almost managed, but got this last night (photo not my own):

I've been drinking whisky (and whiskey) for a few years now. I've tried a lot, and thought mmm that's nice. I've just opened my Xmas present from the wife, Auchentoshan 12 year old. This is the first time I've had a drink and thought wow.
In the big wide world of whisky, it's probably unremarkable, but it's going to take some beating for me.
If you like it then might be worth trying something like Hazelburn or some Irish stuff as other options. Always great to find a lovely new whisky! In the big wide world of whisky, it's probably unremarkable, but it's going to take some beating for me.

I can recommend the Auchentoshan Three Wood, knocks your socks off on taste and good value at under £40!In the big wide world of whisky, it's probably unremarkable, but it's going to take some beating for me.

I do need to replace a bottle of Glengoyne 14 that a mate and I practically emptied on New Year's Eve , but that's all.
Glengoyne 14 year is my new favourite whiskey!! Superb stuff, but the 14 year is exclusive to M&S and they have no stock, and I'm all out. Gutted. I emailed Glengoyne directly and asked them about the 12 and 15 year they do to see if they are similar in taste, and they recommended their 18 year, or a 12 year from their sister distillery.
I recon the 18 year will be worth trying, and in the meantime I'll keep an eye on M&S getting any more 14 year in.

I'll check my local store this weekend. I have to say, I don't think there's a better whisky out there for the same price.Edited by Thunderhead on Wednesday 9th January 20:06

I did OK this money with my Concept 1's
Excellent. Being a bit nosey here, but how much did they go for? Wish I had your resolve on not even looking! It always goes along the lines of
"I'll have a check in case a super special bottle appears"
"Might as well check the usual stuff I am after while here"
"Oh, been looking at them for a while so will add it to watch list in case"
"Some @rses have just outbid me on MY bottles - argh, will end up with nothing!"
"Quick, check if there is good new bottles that somehow are cheap - oh a few"
"Bid bid bid"
"Crap, just spend loads when I am not spending more on whisky these days"

So close to winning a 40 year old Glenfarclas but i bottled it last minute and stopped bidding only for someone to take it for £20 more
I'm guessing it's one of those times you would be annoyed a bit if you won due to price being higher than you were planning before? But now you're annoyed someone just pipped you to "your" bottle, Thanks for the heads up on glengoyne 14 in stores, I had only checked in our local store and then online and where online also says no stock I assumed it meant it wasn't available anywhere. I will call a couple stores local to me to check if they have any, and have to agree its the nicest whiskey I've found at this price range.
Changing the subject slightly, and not trying to hijack the thread too much, but has anyone done a distillery tour they can recommend? I'm in Kent but happy to travel, was thinking glengoyne's tour may be worthwhile but wanted to find out if there are any others worth considering, especially if they are slightly more local.

It was quite an interesting auction this month, I did notice there was quite a few "deals" to be had. There was a Easter Macallan 2008 that had a reserve for £4.5K. it's been going over £6K so a decent bit of profit if you wanted to flip - it did have a small mark on the box though.
The Macallan 40 (series 1) "only" went for £15K, but series 2 was around the 17K .
