Speaking about crazy prices, put 1 of my Chichibu into the latest auction and it's a bit silly!

A few days to go yet too! I don't know absolutely nothing about Japanese whisky, except that the prices have gone mental (and that the spirit wasn't necessarily distilled in japan - allegedly...), what sort of price were these on release?

It depends on the company - this is Chichibu which is completely trustworthy - they label their stuff in different ways to separate it - for example they have a world's blend category of release for stuff that isn't just Japanese. Several of the new distilleries seem to be following this, but other companies are being highly dodgy and importing Scotch whisky and selling it as Japanese. Kurayoshi is one of the worst for this - it only has imported whisky yet has loads of "Japanese" releases, also has made some of the designs very similar to say Yamazaki etc. What makes it even worse is they've started a distillery recently, so it looks like would actually come from there with a quick check, unless you are a bit of a geek. Some other companies have a combination of real stuff and "fake" stuff - generally known about with searching but not always possible to be sure.

Some of the Japanese whisky is absolutely stunning, but most releases now are not there, and all are basically overpriced. Suntory have literally discontinued a grain(!) whisky a week ago because they don't have enough of the stuff to meet demand! (In the 1990's the market was dead in Japan, and even the big distilleries were sometimes filling just 100 casks or so a year, hence massive shortage now). I don't think there is a age statement left from any company.

That bottle was £270 on release in November. Often retail price is more like £150 though. The lowest I've seen a Chichibu single cask go for is around £350 in auction.

I've always been a fan of the Chivas Regal and had a number of different ones, my lovely wife spotted this and told me to buy it.

I'm looking a having a bit of a splurge on whisky. My budget is around £300.

I'm currently eyeing up Glenfraclas 25 on Amazon for £99, which seems a good price. I'd also like to try a Dalmore, either the 12 or 15. Other than that, I'm open to suggestions. My favourite whiskies are Talkisker 10 and Glenglenfiddich 15. Any advise is much appreciated.

Thanks

Rich

Even with the 10% off their prices are on the high side though.
For example the Dalmore King Alexander III would be £162 after discount, compared to Amazon of £136.
The 12 and 15 are closer to the Amazon prices.
Depends which one you are after really, but if you are Prime Amazon customer you will save another £4.95 for postage.

I'm not a Dalmore fan but the cigar malt is worth buying, the rest are not overly interesting and the King Alexander is a complete rip off. I'd suggest trying a Glendronach 18, Glenmorangie Signet and a Talisker distillers edition. Buying 3cl samples of other malts is a good way to try things you're unsure of without committing to a whole bottle. Caol ila distillers edition would be a gentle introduction to peated Islay whisky.

That's a good point.

I've been given a miniature Bunnahabhain 12, and I have to say it's lovely stuff, quite sweet, some spice, sherry, quite creamy and even better with a few drops of water. It's supposed to be lightly peated, but it is very light, if at all. Natural colour, unchillfiltered, 46.3%, and at £36 on Amazon, I'm going to grab a bottle. Bargain!

One of my staples, easy enough to pick up for £36 in waitrose

Thanks, I'll check these out and good idea regarding the 3cl samples.

If not tried before, I would very strongly suggest Talisker 18 , a superb dram, and from what I've tried, one of the 2 best whiskies for under £100. As for another to sample see if you can get a dram , is Power's johns Lane 12 . Its an irish pot still whiskey , and is possibly unlike anything else you may have tried. I find it bloody deliciious, and in regard for vfm, off the scale, its not expensive at all, in the general scheme of things in todays world.

How does the 21 compare to the rest of the range? Is it worth the premium over the 15?

Managed to get some shelving up for my Whisky, wife insisted on white but can’t complain as have a full whisky bedroom !!!!, need a decent TV and something to fill the empty areas. The shelving was from Ikea - the infamous Billybookcase, not sure if to get the glass doors or not, opinions please?

Whiskey canniness should have glass doors in my opinion smile

Just be careful about how much you put on those shelves, my man cave library ones have all buckled under the weight.

I quite like the 21 actually, the rum cask finish has a sweet edge.

In my view...

The 26 is like the 12 in terms of taste - but cranked up to 11 hehe you still get that hint of pear with it. Not worth the £350 price tag though.

The 21 is a touch sweeter and lighter than the 15 and 18. It’s a nice dram, but again not sure if it’s worth the £130 RRP (I picked it up on offer at £80 a while ago), but it’s a £100 bottle.

The 18 feels a touch underpriced at circa £65 and is closer to the 15. Worth a punt.

However, THE best bottle that Glenfiddich do is the 15 Solera from the distillery. It is worth every penny of the £120 price tag. https://www.glenfiddich.com/uk/shop/glenfiddich-th...

Still the most undervalued Glenfiddich in my humble opinion is the IPA Cask release.

You see it in supermarkets for £40 a pop quite often-its delicious.

Agreed, lovely dram.

I was less impressed with Project XX
