Nice selection there! The Bunnahabhain hand bottling seem to be getting fantastic reviews in general these days.

What’s the split view on Ardnahoe? Too many distilleries/too much traffic etc? Versus more jobs, tourism etc.
The Bunna hand bottlings are very tasty, and its a bonus to possibly meet the person who filled yours too, our Warehouse 9 Experience guide had done a couple of the selection we bought among us which was a nice touch.

As for Ardnahoe...it had only been open to the public for a couple of weeks I believe when we visited and obviously needs time to settle in.
Being brand new it is very much based around the visitor centre experience and is perhaps a bit too flash for some people on first impression?
I enjoyed it personally and perhaps got a little too enthusiastic about the worm tubs but the lack of warehousing is a point of discussion locally, the whisky enthusiasts say there is no reason more warehousing cannot be built on the island as per Bruichladdich but there is strong opposition from the conservationists and "bird people" who oppose any further development.

There is also apparently a chronic lack of housing and health facilities etc and incoming workers for any new distilleries may struggle to find accommodation.
Many of the roads are not really fit for purpose now, and the feeling is that a lot of money is leaving the island via the whisky industry with very little return particularly by some of the larger players...we never got any enthusiasm at all from locals regarding the re-opening of Port Ellen which was a little surprising...one of our lot with a few rare bottles kept very quiet when discussing this with our brilliant taxi driver Charlie who was a born & bred Caol Ila man.

Anyone done the Glengoyne distillery tour? Local specialist is running a day trip up there that's very good value so we're going next month.

Picked up a bottle of Jura 7wood for £46.66 on a clearance sale in Tesco, rather pleased as it's something I've wanted to try but was unwilling to pay the £69 asking price!!

Done it before but that was about 7 years ago! Think they have a range of stuff, including a sherry and a bourbon bottle your own stuff (think that might be a special tour option). One fun fact is the distillery is in the highlands, but the whisky matures in the lowlands. The road between the distillery and warehouses is on the separation line (it's the Highland Boundary Fault as the basis - hopefully no earthquakes when you're there, wink)

My wife bought me a bottle a month ago for my birthday, it's very nice, lower ABV than the 23yo was - not that I'm complaining at 53% though biggrin. Great value, I'm surprised there's any left to be honest!

I found the 23yo to be a bit one dimensional. Some of their recent younger releases have been really good though, especially the Tomatin and Fettercairn which is far better than the very bland distillery 12.

Question to the experts here - has anyone got any experience of selling a few bottles of now valuable whisky (currently advertised at £500+ a bottle depending where you look). if so how do you go about it? Realise this sounds a bit vague but need some advice for a family member without falling foul of advertising and thought this would be a good place to ask! Source is easy to prove and it was relatively recent bottling so hopefully no long term storage issues! But no idea how to advise them...

Generally there isn't anything to do about storage stuff - it's basically down to the condition of the box and bottle. Safest way is via an auction site. Something like say scotchwhiskyauctions.com or whiskyauctioneer.com. You'll pay a bit to sell, but you're basically safe. Alternatively you can do it on one of the many facebook sites. However there is cases that pop up every so often of some scam so it's more risky if you don't know people. For auction sites there is a lot of new ones - you want bigger ones as so many new ones are not really known and so it risks selling a lot more under market price as few buyers.

Thanks for the info, really appreciate it -have passed on the 2 websites you mentioned for them to take a look at. Don’t think they will be up for FB and all that can bring! Thanks again

Scotch Whisky Auction - for me.

I've sold bottles from £100 to £15K and I've never had an issue with them. They pay earlier than suggested and their fee's are not mental either. For example see a recent sale:

Hammer Price £95
Listing Fee £5
Tax on fees £1
Amount Due £89

Above is the exact same on any value of bottle. If you want to put a reserve on a bottle (if reserve is not met, bottle doesn't sell - for the avoidance of doubt) they will get back in touch with you to either collect or put it in the next auction. You will of course have to pay the fees again as it's a new auction.

Hope this helps!

OK PH whisky hive mind - anything unusual/rare that's worth having for about 40-50 quid?

I'm going to join a few friends for a whisky evening this coming weekend, and a couple of them have rather deeper pockets than me (one of them has mentioned bringing "the entire GoT collection and a couple of Yamazakis"). I can't offer anything fun in terms of £££, so something a bit left field would be good to have in the arsenal smile

Or find something from an Octave cask - the Duncan Taylor range is pretty good. Also check out TWE's Signatory offerings.
