Oh my god.

I can't believe I've done it but I kinda accidentally bought a bottle of Haig club.

I've no idea why , I'll report back later to critique and to face my music on here I suspect.

for anyone interested ASDA are selling 70cl Haig Club for £16.
I have heard haig club is actually really nice, I have always dismissed it. Is it any good?
it is terrible terrible whisky, genuinely foul as piss but at the same time dull as weedy and reedy as a snake's fart. It coasts on advertising, marketing and brand association, and even given that, it has dropped and dropped in realistic selling price from over £50 (fifty fking quid this is!) to ASDA special offer price. This isn't even the sttest one they do - they make a thing called Clubman, which even they admit is really only for mixing.... it is even sold as a mixing whisky. Anyone saying this st is good, is someone not worth asking ever again about whisky and i'd even go as far as to say you should sever all ties with this person. Cut them off, you don't need that in your life.
I agree with 2CV but I am not quite so eloquent. Any beverage associated with sport or sportspeople is to be avoided.
Agreed completely. Cheap, blended trash. Down there with Grouse and Teachers, but with better advertising.

The person who recommended it probably lists Jack Daniels Honey as their favourite whisky.

It's not a blend by the way.

Ok I tied it. It's not the most unpleasant Whisky I have had, but it is certainly an unusual taste. I get that people mix it and can see why.

Kind of feels like a white grain spirit mixed with a citrus/vanilla flavouring.

Only thing I've drank that tasted in any way alike was a 1975 Dallas Dhu, except that was stunning, and £50 a nip.

And for the snobs, Grouse is a massive seller for a reason. Not my cuppa but again not the worst.

Any recommendations in that ilk to help me expand?
Try one of the peated Balvenies, not sure how widely available they are, but a duty free bottle bought at the airport last year was superb. Think it was about £70 or so.

Also there are two 'must always haves' in my drinks cabinet:

Lagavulin 16 year old - About £45

Talisker 10 year old - About £35

Both acquired tastes, but when you acquire them, you're glad you did.

All IMHO of course. smile

Agreed on Laga and Talisker: These are great and widely available character Whiskies. I'd add Clynelish 14 to the must try character list.

There's always Laga 16 and Clynelish 14 in my cabinet.
I also really like Glen Scotia 15, not a standard malt, but a must try from my point of view.

Decided to get a bottle of Smokehead Sherry Bomb.

A little uncertain as to what to expect from this.
I like peated whisky and I like Oloroso sherry cask finish whisky, so hopefully this will be divine rather than tasting like sherry that's been used to clean an ashtray......

Sounds intersting - I tend to prefer either peated whishies or sherry bombs. At home I have the follwing Sherry Cask Islays

Laphroaig PX (Pedro Ximénez)
Laphroaig Tripple Wood (Oloroso)
Ardbeg Uigeadial (Sherry butts)

I had a bottle of teh standard Smokehead a few years ago but felt that I prefered other Islay whishies in the same price range.

Hi

I was on the same boat as you - but totally forgot (for obvious reasons)

You could phone Glenfiddich and get them to bottle the whisky available in the visitor centre on the day.

Thanks

They have a bottle your own but it's usually old and pricey ~£300.

I think that was me.

GlenAllachie do this - they have an 11yo Chinquapin single cask for £100, and a 13yo sherry cask for £105. However, open Monday to Friday so not sure how that matches.

Glenfiddich have the 15yo cask strength batches.

Glen Moray do 3 different BYO casks - a cheaper peated and something else (often a wine finish) for around £55, plus an older more expensive one. Also think they'd be ok setting one aside if you ask.

As mentioned Glendronach are something like £300 now for their older cask BYO. Fancy new visitor's centre is open.

Glenglassaugh perhaps - they have a BYO but I think there is not often someone there unless you arrange a visit, so could be hard.

Balblair should have one - I guess around £95 (it was in May for the one then).

Glen Garioch do 5 different BYO versions I think these days - so wide range in price and cask types to choose from if you would like that.

Same goes for Tomatin - 4 different casks for around £70-100 or so (approximately 10-13yo?) plus a 1990 for around £300.

Glendronach have a 2005, PX cask just now at £130 & it is exceptional I bought some bottles the other week after tasting it.
