After trying the Glen Garioch Virgin Oak, bought a bottle from Royal Mile Whiskies. It may be NAS, but I really like it; quite sweet and spicey, a lovely dram (appeals to my taste anyway).
Is it along the lines of the Ben Riach American Virgin Oak?
You mean the 99 13YO that I check every single auction for in the vain hope of spotting? hehe

It's the closest thing I've found to it, but it's not quite there. It has some of that vanilla sweetness, but there more spice to it than the Benriach had. The Benriach also had that lovely sort of confectionery note on the nose, which this doesn't have. Worth seeking out though IMO. Still in stock at Royal Miles Whiskies I think.

Edit - having checked, the Glen Garioch had full maturation in virgin oak, whereas the Benriach was matured in ex Bourbon casks and finished in virgin oak, which would explain the spiciness in the Glen Garioch.

got my bottles to mark the birth of my daughter. I got 2 of the 14 year old (so I can drink one!) and 1 of the 25 year old. All marked with her date of birth and to be put in a cupboard for a special day.

Been to the opening of a new Whiskey bar in Liverpool tonight. If you like your rare, vintage and unusual whiskeys, then this is definitely a place to visit! smile
Called Hop Scotch (for it sells craft beer and whiskey), it's up on Constance Street by the hospital rather than down in town. No sign, but look for a mural of an Easter Island head above some stairs (it all sounds very hipster, but I can assure you it isn't hehe )
Open on Thursdays and Fridays 6pm-midnight, and weekends 3pm-midnight, so I'm told.

Newcomer to the thread here.....

In an attempt to try and 'get into' whisky after a few half arsed attempts to drink Bells etc. usually with cola, I've decided to have a proper go. I visited the Whisky Shop in York and asked the helpful gentlemen to give my mrs a starter kit of 4-5 miniatures for her to wrap up for me a Christmas gift. I've also bought a tasting glass and a beginners guide on Amazon.

I didn't use to like Gin when my only exposure to it was Gordons/Beefeater etc. so hopefully this will go the same way!
Welcome. Any idea which samples you got? smile
Thanks, these are what I have.

Sorry about the poor pic, I’ll get a better one later.
Just a little update from me, I've worked my way through these since Christmas and I just can't get along with them. None of them appeal to me at all, they all taste too 'harsh' and I just don't find them nice tasting.

I've been told to perhaps try a bourbon, so I am going to have a bash at these and see if they appeal to me any more.

before you give up on them try them with a splash of SOFT water, buy bottled water if in a hard water area.
No more than 20% water but potentially way less will open up a whole range of different flavours and aromas.

Avoid ice which will strangle said aromas and flavours.

Highland Park and Balvenie Double Wood are excellent ones to try

Jack Daniels isn't bourbon. (It's also piss)

If you want a decent starter bourbon try Buffalo Trace

Makers mark is a good shout too. Bourbon usually doesn't have a harsh taste. Tends to be smooth, sweet, sometimes a little spicy. A bit 'thicker' than scotch if that's the right word. Perhaps oilier would be a better word

Where?

I've desperately been wanting to try the Yam25 for literally years...
At the Yamazaki distillery just outside Kyoto!

Good value at £20 a shot!

Interesting, I have a bottle of Bullit Bourbon at the back of my whisky cupboard but I can't get past the general harshness/roughness of it; I also find Bourbons taste very artificial / chemical.

Four Roses is the only bourbon I have tried that doesn't taste like glue. I probably need to try a few more butr I am loathe to buy another bottle that will just sit at teh back of teh cupboard...

I have had a bottle of bulleit in the past but also found it quite harsh.

Their rye on the other hand I enjoyed a lot

Yep. smile Flip or keep it, that is the question! Did I (we) get lucky, or have they released more of this version (previous releases were 2000 bottles IIRC)? I don't think I've seen any of the previous Folios sell for less than £600 at auction, so unlikely to take a bath on it - unless there are 10000 bottles or something!
