Yep. smile Flip or keep it, that is the question! Did I (we) get lucky, or have they released more of this version (previous releases were 2000 bottles IIRC)? I don't think I've seen any of the previous Folios sell for less than £600 at auction, so unlikely to take a bath on it - unless there are 10000 bottles or something!
How much are they retail before flipping.

Does anyone drink the stuff?

i've only tasted a couple of macallans, and not the 'big money' ones either, but still i was unimpressed. I think it's the sort of brand that executive type people have in their drinks cabinet to show off. The only other people that buy them are the flippers. It's a weird brand proposition but clearly it doesn't bother the distillery.

The old 10 yo sherry oak was nice, but that was a long time ago when you could buy it for £30!

But generally it goes: get lucky with ballot > buy > flip > buy far better value whisky to drink with proceeds. wink

According to a chap that spoke to a source at Macallan, the word is that there are 20,000 folio 5.

I got 2 in the ballot, one will be flipped straight away as it seems they are processing orders in stages. The other, who knows. They won't go below the £260 each have cost me inc postage (in my opinion) so I may hold onto it until a bit further down the line.

Cracked open a Macallan Concept 1 yesterday as it was my Birthday. It was OK, not my usual heavily sherrried preference but pleasant enough.

It seems my earlier post was correct - according to FB Macallan groups, it seems they may have released far more than the usual 2000 on this release, which is nice of them - good way to devalue the whole collection with another 19 releases to go! irked There are around 40 on the current Whisky Auctioneer auction, current bids around £400-£450 with three days to go. If the rumours of numbers are correct, then next month's round of auctions will be flooded with them, and they will probably only go for just over RRP. I think I'll hang onto mine.

No age statement, most likely chill filtered and probably watered down but I love this stuff.

Tesco’s are getting rid and had it discounted to £22.50 a bottle. Lovely!

you can often join distillery mailing lists or even committees (which are basically just mailing lists with fancy names) and you get early sight of things coming down the line. You may even get early access or dedicated committee releases.

I'm not a huge fan of it, but it's a damn good price!

A mere 118 bottles of it on this month's Whisky Hammer auction. laughMine is staying in the cupboard for a while.

https://www.whiskyhammer.com/auction/current/q-Mac...

Joking aside, I think it's a bit off that Macallan decided to produce loads more of this edition than normal, but failed to mention it on the ballot invitation.

It's one of the few whiskeys I'll drink neat (rather than on the rocks), with how long the IPA influence has on it it really shouldn't have any perceptible influence and maybe it doesn't but I do like it.

Few different things there, smile

Anyone ordering tickets for Spirit of Speyside tomorrow? I have my plan of action, but am almost certain the site will blow up tomorrow lunch when it starts. Not as in "slow down and be slow", as in just completely go down. It looks nicer this year, but seems to be very slow and heavy to use (presumably pictures, perhaps scripting underneath too?) already. And that's not when everyone is going crazy getting the popular tickets. In addition it is far harder to work out a plan of action for the schedule due to it missing end times and costs. Plus not being able to search on town is annoying if you want that option to see what other things you can do in the same area that day.

I ordered two of these today (they'll be released tomorrow for general sale). Should be decent value at £56, unless it's sulphered:

The BenRiach looks lovely!

My tickets are booked for the Spirit of Speyside Festival.

Tamdhu - Spain to Speyside on Thursday
GlenAllachie Tour and tasting with the Distillery Manager on Friday
Aultmore - Sunday

Website shat itself at midday but I kept an eye on their twitter feed and managed to get these all bought by 1230.

Just a little update from me, I've worked my way through these since Christmas and I just can't get along with them. None of them appeal to me at all, they all taste too 'harsh' and I just don't find them nice tasting.

I've been told to perhaps try a bourbon, so I am going to have a bash at these and see if they appeal to me any more.

Jack Daniels isn't bourbon. (It's also piss)

If you want a decent starter bourbon try Buffalo Trace
Took a tour of the Buffalo Trace distillery back last year. An incredible operation. Very slick.

Went in thinking I wasn't a bourbon fan, and came home with a bottle of Blanton's Single Barrel. Absolutely fabulous stuff.

ETA - they do a pretty cool thing with the Blanton's stoppers, which are horses in various poses. You can buy a used barrel plank to mount all 9 of the different stopper designs in order, so that it matches the poses of a running horse.

Makes a mean Old Fashioned, mind!
The only real use for it, IMHO.

I'll never understand people who drink cheap bourbon neat.

Nice! Some people couldn't access the site, so they put it on hold until 12:20 or so, when the bug was fixed. However, it seems some events appeared more slowly than others. Unluckily for me I was bashing F5 for one of the later ones, so missed the Craigellachie 10am, but got one ticket at 11:30.

I'll be seeing you at GlenAllachie on Friday as also booked there, plus Dailuaine in the morning! In addition got Linkwood the day before, plus Craigellachie and GlenAllachie Rum on Sat. I'll add a few events that are less popular when I have a better idea on plans (girlfriend is moving from Aus, so depending when she gets her visa will impact my events. She's not the biggest whisky drinker so I am already at the limit of the geeky ones if she comes, biggrin She says book anyway, but I don't want to completely put her off in future!).

On the subject of GlenAllachie, I've just picked up one of these.

As a huge fan of sherry casks this should be interesting.
