Think Glasgow must be a good example as still gets good reviews online. Was the last day of my sons summer holidays so had a boys day out getting new rugby boots for school. I was with my 13 year old son with blond hair at 1.
Out of interest was it previously a Harvester or something else? Out of all the ones I have been to, those that are ex-Harvesters, have been far the worst and the others have been good to great (and yes I have been to the London places like Hawksmore, Mash, Smith and Wollensky, Goodman etc.) I am fairly convinced so far that if they were ex-harvesters and the kitchen staff were retained that is the core of the poor food in those establishments.

Think it was an old bank as the entrance to the toilet door is an old safe. They seemed to have spent a lot of money on it as it's a massive old building with big glass dome in the roof and quite fancy inside for a chain.I am fairly convinced so far that if they were ex-harvesters and the kitchen staff were retained that is the core of the poor food in those establishments.

It was pretty good, I still prefer Cau in Wilmslow - I'm not really a steak guy though so i like that the steaks at Cau are a bit more exotic with Chimichurri etc. Preferred the triple cooked beef dripping chips at Hawksmoor, but overall Upstairs at the Grill was very good, great drinks menu, and not many places serve haggis fritters!
The cabbage and bacon at upstairs is to die for, currently off the menu for summer. We have tried hawksmoor and like it, but prefer upstairs, we went to CAU in liverpool and it was a shambles, had to send back the rib eye twice to get it medium. Came out blue originally.21TonyK said:

The one right on the big roundabout not far from Tower Park?
If so, the last couple of times I visited the service was shocking and the food not as good as the first visit
(last visit was about 10 months ago though)
Yep, that's the one. Oh well, I'll give it a go for lunch and see what happens. If so, the last couple of times I visited the service was shocking and the food not as good as the first visit

Anyone tried the one in Poole? Location seems to hint at a previous life? It's very close to where I will be visiting pretty regularly for the next 6 years so if its any good it could become a regular if its any good.
Everytime we've eaten there one meal has to go back. Yet other M&C's always get it rightSir Bagalot said:

I might have to try http://www.silkandgrain.co.uk/ its just down the road from my office

Been there and its pretty underwhelming. The meat is OK but nothing special, certainly not to the standard I would expect in London. The real problem is the chips that, both times I have been. have been so crunchy they are basically inedible. We had a mac and cheese side the first time and it was loaded with salt too. I have had better meals in Flat Iron.21TonyK said:

What other steak/Burger options are good for Bournemouth & Poole?

Service was average but the biggest downfall was the environment. Recently flooded, apparently, with soggy carpets and an off-putting smell. Not great when the food isn't exactly cheap.

yes, when abroad we try and hit the best steakhouses about, has to be done when visiting the USA.
Interesting- posted before that Keens was terrible when we went. Sent steaks back several times as it was overcooked - then they left sidedishes on table to get cold - before we asked for some hot ones. Steak was OK and nothing remarkable at all. Staff did not seem to care either, that's my lasting memory of the place. Like many NYC restaurants you have to book a long time in advance - so wonder if they get complacent as mostly full many lunches and evenings. I wouldn't recommend Keens to anyone. I'll have to check with colleagues in Manhattan as to which restaurant they favour at the moment for a great steak.
In fact, i cannot remember having a truly great steak in the US. Their beef is overrated in my view. Had some phenomenal Argentinian steaks, great Brazilians barbecues, best steak i've ever eaten was in Dubai (at an Argentinian restaurant). Plenty of UK restaurants with Scottish or Herefordshire beef were far better than i remember US steaks tasting. When i go to NYC now i deliberately don't do steak houses. So much choice there- it's a bit boring anyway! Or Fade St social in Dublin - now the Irish beef there is incredible.
My company likes to go to S&W for meetings quite often - and you cannot fault the aged texture of their meat- it's very tender, but it just doesn't taste that amazing.
I tend to go for Rib-eye to get the flavour but do enjoy a good fillet. Have had Chateaubriand at Raymond Blancs brasseries a few times- that has been consistently delicious, well cooked and great service. I've been to Hawksmoor once - great food but you don't feel like you get great value.
