Visited Horsham beer festival at the weekend, and discovered Harviestoun Brewerys Ola Dubh 30, basically a 10.5% (sadly the bottled version is only 8.5%) version of their Engine Oil porter that's been matured in Highland Park barrels. £3.40 for a half pint is a bit steep but oh my god it's tasty, I don't usually like smokey porters but smokey works really well with a hint of whisky.

On holiday in Norway some time back I tried Ægir Gævlea, similarly aged in whisky barrels, that was also bloody lovely, albeit at a truly eyewatering price.

So are there many other whisky barrel matured beers out there worth trying? Google turns up some American examples but any more British ones?

Brewdog have done some in the past, not sure what's currently available though.

Obsidian won the Great British Food Awards best of British this year. Imperial Russian stout matured in Speyside whisky casks. Very nice it is too.

Disclaimer, my son owns the brewery :-)

Brewdog have a couple just now Paradox Islay and Shipwreck - two very different styles, but the Islay is fairly mellow compared to previous releases, and Shipwreck is good in my opinion but is a bit Marmite for some people.

There is of course Innis and Gunn for British, but another one worth trying is Het Uiltje from Holland - they do quite a few different styles, but the Meneer du Uil Ledaig cask, and Peer Pressure are two of my favourite beers..

Visited the Het Uiltje brewery a while back, most of their beers were a bit hoppy for my my taste but one or two good ones, I don't remember them having a whisky aged one on at the time though. Worth a visit if you're ever in Haarlem, it's a bit out of the way in a trading estate but they have a good selection of beers on tap and do nice bagels for lunch. Think they've got a bar closer to the town center too.

This is the Het Uiltje stuff I mentioned - for whisky casked beers, I don't normally go much past porters and imperial stouts..

Found them in a beer shop in Bruges, brought some home and ended up ordering more online..

Ægir Gævlea

Bergen Ølfestival two weeks ago and these guys had a stand. I went with the wife's uncle who knew the guy on the stand that owns the brewery, he said that they brewed it to go with cheese, specifically Norsk Gamle Ost (literal translation Norwegian old cheese) and I could see it would work, as the cheese is super dry and earthy, you eat it on bread with a fkton of butter so that it moistens it a bit. Interesting stuff. 450nok for a 250ml bottle though :O

Yeah, we stayed at the brewery/pub/hotel in Flåm and I'm pretty sure they offered a cheese platter as part of the beer tasting.

Not according to a recent discussion, although it seems Old Peculier is. OP must be drunk from the tap though, it's nowhere near as good from a bottle.

That was a mention more for completeness than anything, as I occasionally find one of their beers I like such as the recent Bourbon cask but that's about it - never realised OP was casked, and it's one I haven't had for a while..

Another suggestion from me would be De Molen, who do some of their's in whicsky casks.
