I am looking for a new BBQ and am undecided on whether to go gas / charcoal or dual fuel, currently swaying to the dual fuel idea for best of both worlds , possibly the outback one , anyone here got one or any thoughts on them, Also the contemplating the outback gas 6 burner as well so any advice would be great
thanks

I bought an Outback BBQ laast year. It's awful. It wasn't a top of the line one, but it was about £350 for a gas BBQ, so I would expect it to be up to the job.
It's a gas one, with lava rocks covering the burners to distribute heat. It cremates everything anywhere near a burner, and is cold in between the (very badly laid out and fixed position) burners, to the point where you can hover your hand an inch above the grill in places and barely feel heat.
I complained to Outback and told them it was poor, and backed it up with other reviews from people experiencing the same problems and was told that that was just the way it was. st customer service. I will junk it/sell it this summer and buy a Weber.

Go for charcoal.
I have a gas and a charcoal BBQ. The gas one gets used very rarely and is really only good for grilling (it's a Weber Q so you can't set it up for indirect heat).
The Weber kettle charcoal BBQ was used 2-3 times a week last summer. Far more versatile and easy enough to get lit if you have a chimney starter or two. It's also worth buying the Weber BBQ cookbook.

If you haven't already read the "BBQ photo and recipe" thread, then I would strongly advise reading it before making a decision.
The Weber kettle seems to attract no criticism, and looks a very safe choice.
Last year I bought a "Pit Boss" ceramic BBQ from Costco. It is absolutely fantastic. It cost £450.00, but this is a third of the price of the equivalent Big Green Egg.

I have used a Weber Genisis gas bbq for the past 6 years or so, it still looks like new(ish) despite extensive use. I find that gas is less hassle and being less hassle means that I use it more. I can just get home from work, spark it up and 10 mins later it is ready to go. I can even wheel it to the kitchen door and cook 'indoor' bbq in cool weather! Don't get me wrong, if you get it right, charcoal is the gold standard, a quality gas bbq is not too far behind - but I just find them a bit inconsistent. Each to their own I guess. My suggestion whichever way you go is to buy a good quality item, defo better value in the long term.
I've got the outback meteor 6 burner with lava rocks mentioned above and I think it's pretty good. Don't get me wrong it isn't as good quality as my friend's equivalent weber, but it was £300 in a sale vs £1500 for the weber so get what your pay for.
As for being able to put your hand over parts of it when it's on??? Sounds like you have a dodgy one! Mine is certainly not cold in places but I did find purchasing a 2nd packet of lava rocks was very helpful in stopping flare ups which then could cause some burning. And the hot plate is great for morning fry ups and cooking eggs. Also it is MASSIVE, you can cook 30 burgers with ease so that's huge plus if you are used to having guests.
As with everything, you pay your money you make your choice, but for £300 I think it is very good value.

Mate of mine has one of these : http://www.kadai.co.uk/shop/32-Wilstone-on-High-an...
Can do virtually anything on them with the add-ons. My mate got a set of cast iron skillets online for 30 odd quid, he does just about anything on it, steaks , stews etc etc.
Built to last, will still be usefull when Nelson gets his eye back .

To many rich kids on here with no imagination , 45 gallon drum cut in half down the length with some thick mesh inside to form the grill and stand it on some concrete blocks , hell , you may even cut yourselves on the raggy edge of the drum if you don't grind it off . Chicks dig scars , real men cook over fire

Real men can make fireStart up the gas BBQ, and at a primordial level, deep in her midbrain, sending messages to the lower regions, her unconscious mind says "he is not good for propagating my genes, he cannot make fire"
she leaves the BBQ and picks up a bloke in your local dodgy boozer, you know the one with blokes hanging around the front that you dare not go in.
Those blokes make fire. Some of them have fire in their bellies. Some of them have criminal records. Ironically they all have gas cigarette lighters, and so the world turns

I have most bases covered with three devices:
1. ProQ bullet smoker, hot and cold smoking (with cold smoke generator) also configurable as a grill
2. Uuni 2 Pizza oven
3. Webber Spirit E310 for gas when I need to grill something quickly, although with a smoking box I have done low and slow in it quite happily.

Thanks, I do like the idea of the of the outback 6 burner! but then I also like making fire especially as it annoys her decisions decisions and then there is the whole smoking side plus a pizza oven
I've done some great pizzas in my egg bbq. I use the Webber pizza stone. It works a treat.I've also had great success using it as a cold smoker using this:-

I've smoked salmon, cheddar, and bacon. They all turned out much better than shop bought equivalents.
