I think if the food standards agency or whoever saw that burger, it would be the end of that butchers doing cooking demonstrations.

It's amazing that people who apparently like food can't quite grasp the idea that raw =/= rare.

That burger picture above is just cold raw beef with cold grated cheese on top.
That burger was positively well cooked, compared to some of their other dishes. wink

Yes, that was eaten raw...
Oh no. Think of the children. How disgusting and unsafe. laugh

Well after reading this thread I found myself walking past the new 5-guys in town after a beer last night.

As a tight Northerner, if totally sober I probably would have walked out after seeing the prices (£4 for regular fries, ye Gods!) but bit the bullet and ordered a burger.

I found it very nice indeed...but not really worth the cash.

Ok - not a burger place exactly - but the local gastro pub near me does a mean bacon cheese burger. And sod health 'n safety - you can ask for it medium rare, (earlier in the week ended up in GBK with friends and was told they couldn't cook it to medium rare !. I did point out they can but just need to take off the grill a bit early is all ... smile )

Highlight of the gastro pub is proper chips, and as a side order - pickled onion rings lick The onion rings are a thing of beauty - will grab a photo next time I'm up there.

Including a beer, and the side of onions rings looking at less than £20 - and you leave feeling stuffed.

I've been to 5 guys in the past quite a few times but I don't think £8.50 for a bacon cheeseburger is worth it so haven't been in a while.

I'd eat there if I was starving and the next food place was a 2 mile walk but when they have a shop next to other places like in the Trafford Centre i'd rather go somewhere else and get a meal for £5 biggrin

Just over 3 years ago in my kitchen (son requested a giant burger for dinner on his 13th birthday).

Funny you should say that, the other week I visited a good quality butchers that also had a counter where they would cook what you just bought as well as a few specials.

I was quite happy ordering some 'risky' dishes like this dry aged beef burger with cheese tongue out

Cut in half for full affect:

I'd eat that, looks good!

We had burgers at the Hawksmoor chain this week. £50 for two burgers, two small fries, one small macaroni and a glass of wine.

The burgers were ok but the fries came in a steel pot but contained in a paper cone which made them small infact.

Overall ok but pricey. If we had had two to three drinks each it'd have easily been 70-80+

Sounds pretty steep for a burger which was 'okay'! How much was the burger itself?

yikes

Local chippy charges £2.70 for a large chips that causes the car suspension to sag a bit. Ok slight exaggeration but 3 of us have never finished them at one sitting. That's even with the dog snagging the odd chip too.

In a restaurant. In central London. You try playing their rent and staffing costs, then question the price of chips...

At a rough estimate it's about a 1/5 if that of the size. It's served in a fairly small conical of paper inside a metal beaker.

I'm not complaining per se. Just an observation.

Burger and fries should be burger AND fries though not following along trailing behind like a lost puppy. It should be a strong support act.

Yeah, I get that. I don't expect anyone to work at a loss. Any resto needs to pay the rent, staff, buy ingredients and then return a profit for the shareholders. I haven't got a problem with that. It's just p*ss poor marketing to structure it as they have done. I'd pay £17 for a burger in central London, if it came served with salad, chips and all the rest. If however you want £13 for the burger and £4 for a bag of chips then it's that bit that smacks of taking the p*ss. I know that there isn't a difference, it's just the way that it's presented.
