These places aren’t fine dining, it’s basic stuff being punted at not very basic prices and maybe they’re being found out.
I've not had a Byron but just went on the website and a burger, fries, and a drink is about £15.

That's to collect.

A McDonald's Signature meal is £6.50 and I would expect McDonald's have a lot lower overheads.

It's unfortunate but I'm not surprised if there aren't enough people prepared to pay it.
I hate to sound like a tosser but in my opinion Byron are popular in places where people don't know any better, usually positioned near a Nandos, so the lads have a choice...

Each to their own, of course, but I've never had a good meal or customer service at a Byron. Once, when our preferred burger joint couldn't open because of issues with their equipment and we had to go to Byron, we had such a sarcastic and smug waiter it completely put me off them forever.

The issue with places like Byron and GBK is that the market is over saturated right now. There's a ton of new cool burger places popping out, from indies to new chains and most of them have some kinda niche. With chains like Byron, GBK and even Dirty Burger, they were one of the "pioneers" of the "gourmet" type burgers and at the start, "gourmet" was enough to attract many people but frankly, most of their burgers are boring and generic with no real standouts.

I'm a burger lover and I'd happily spend money on burgers but as long as it tastes nice and is different

e.g:
-shake shack, their niche is being "smash style" burgers with soft potato buns
-Burger and beyond- cheesy, messy American style burgers
-Bleeker burger- High-quality dry aged meat
-Patty and bun- Ari gold burger

you get the idea.

In my experience, I've always found the best burgers to be at independent restaurants, particularly ones who specialise in steaks. The Carrington Arms in Moulsoe (near Milton Keynes) and the Fox & Hounds in Riseley do very nice burgers on their lunch menus and the prices aren't completely unreasonable. The trouble is finding the good places.

Is it just me? Everywhere now seems to charge at least £10 for a burger and a few fries thrown in. Often the fries will be in a small pot of some sort and the burger in my opinion meagre. Even when you get additions the price seems to go north over £15.

Am I being tight?
No it appears not https://www.theguardian.com/business/2018/jan/09/b...
It's hard to say what is going on with Byron. Plenty of negative press in 2017. Rapid expansion by Hedge Fund owner. Could easily be sucking money out of the business or being tight with quality ingredients. Operating profits used to be around 10%. Last year 1%. On 80M revenues thats a big hit. 67 stores 1.2M avg per store.
I think a lot of chains are running on vapours. I sat in a bar opposite the Corn exch byrons, there were more staff than punters, on a Saturday night. Handmade burger co seems in trouble too.

I had a basic but very nice homemade steakburger, chips and salad in the Milecastle up on Hadrians Wall last Wednesday night and it cost £6.95 and a cracking pint of Prince Bishop ale for £3.

That's cheap even for up north

I've never been to Byrons. What are the burger/fries portions like?

Let's get some truth out there. I've worked for some food companies. Few pubs and restaurants make their own homemade burgers. The vast majority of food outlets from your burger van to mid to upper restaurants will purchase their supplies from Booker, Batleys or Bidfood (formerly 3663).

Love that meal you had in that posh restaurant at the weekend? Cooked to perfection? It was probably microwaved Bidfood portions. Nice Sunday roast? Think the meat was roasted fresh? Nope - probably Bidfood portions. Most of the work is done presenting the dish from pouches. It's amazing how in the UK we come so far with so many restaurants and pubs using pre-cooked portions.

I can go into a food establishment and tell exactly what they use. It's a con sometimes but I can say a lot of times it does taste good.

Lmao, you talk as if every place does this, let's not generalise. It MAY be true for pubs and crappy chains but I highly doubt many independent places or restaurants that do legit food do this. I know for a fact, a few independent places that do all their cooking from scratch using fresh ingredients and some of these places are far from "posh".

P.s this is coming from someone that's literally been brought up in the industry.

Easy places to spot. If they have more than one branch and are a national company chances are yes.

I avoid such places. Sadly on NY day family friends booked one such place in a posh part of Manchester. The food was hideous.

I'm not saying that every place does this and you have to be wary that this isn't just confined to pubs and chains. But more and more independents are switching from cooked from scratch to portion-o-rama in a bag. Some places will cook from scratch some food and microwave in a bag others dishes.

One round my way who is known for their pizzas buys in frozen bases with the sauce on them, another traditional tea shop uses frozen premade scones for cream teas, another trendy bar with "burger" in its name uses frozen burgers. 3 rosette restaurant using premade frozen desserts dressed up with bought in garnishes and generic petit pain, £9 for a box of 120.

Anyway, back on track about burger prices. I'm sure its been said before, the price you pay for the food is not a reflection of its cost, its a reflection of the rent, rates, staff costs, VAT, utilities et all. Then the ingredients and profit (if any),
Flip side I can think of several that do make pretty much everything themselves.

Five guys definitely make the patties fresh as they cook it in front of you, anyone else who can get away with prepackaged will.

They do cut the mince and shape it themselves but that’s about it. Don’t get the fuss that they don’t use seasonings etc in the mince which gives a burger the flavour. Wasn’t impressed when I had one and glad I didn’t buy it! No I didn’t steal it either was doin a job for them and they fed me.

5 guys is no barometer. hugely overrated by a british public who dont know what a proper american burger should be.

id venture that Mcd's in the states is nicer burger than the overpriced crap you get from 5 guys or shakeshack, over here. yet to try smashburger but imagine its the same. fatburger is better but in a wky part of london

McDonald's in America is absolutely terrible.
