5 guys is no barometer. hugely overrated by a british public who dont know what a proper american burger should be.

id venture that Mcd's in the states is nicer burger than the overpriced crap you get from 5 guys or shakeshack, over here. yet to try smashburger but imagine its the same. fatburger is better but in a wky part of london
McDonald's in America is absolutely terrible.
still beats the uk take on these chains

went to france for a day and ate their McDs. dont remember what i got but it tasted so much better than anything we get in the UK.
it might have been a royle deluxe. definately had a higher fat content but so what.

There is a pub in Cheddar (The Riverside Inn) where during the week they do 'Burger & a pint for £10' I had a meal there last week and chose the pulled pork burger and very nice it was!

They're supposed to be but they don't have to be. The only difference people should care about is the difference between bad food, average food and good food. A burger can fall into any one of those categories.

You're paying a high price for the fun. Burgers and a drink for four in the Cheltenham one when it opened came to £60. The added toppings didn't make the burger any less bland. I far prefer Byron's burgers and it's no more expensive, plus it doesn't feel like ordering in a motorway service area.

Oh yes, I was just dragged there by the kids when it opened. The power of branding!

gbk and byron are on par with mcd's signature imo poor excuses for a proper burger.

5 guys fries are rank, and the burgers soggy and sweaty. any basic chain in the states beats them imo.

best burger that comes close to a decent yank burger is bleecker.

How many of those independents are just using reheated Brakes / Bidfood stuff? It's already been pointed out by 21Tonyk and vikingaero.
none as far as im aware, suggest checking out burgerlads blog for independent reviews. he has reviewed a few of places in Cheltenham over the years i think (think hes local that way) and from memory was glowing. the ones i'm referring to are dedicated burger places. his site is blocked at my work as seemingly burgers are against corporate policy! so i can't dig the specifics out for you!

Bleeker is a decent burger as is Dip n Flip (just off Northcote road, Battersea Rise, SW11)

Byron although isn't the best burger for me is a decent burger and family friendly for a quick lunch over the weekend.

Unless Byron have gone downhill in the 2 years since I went there last, I'd say they were a definite cut above gbk and mcd's sig.
Fiveguys is a dirty burger but sometimes that's just what you want (if in that mood)

Having said that I've been on a burger quest for several years and never been wowed as in 10/10 amazing by any burger I've had in the UK. They are passable tho, kinda 7/10 range for the two mentioned

Yes, I really like their food but I've been to two different venues and found the service poor in both on several separate occasions.

Started in Bournemouth I think, I must get around to trying this place as it gets rave reviews from friends/family.

I see their Instagram posts and the burgers do look amazing.

My local does a lovely meat range, a personal fave being their pulled pork burger. Nice rare beef patty with pulled pork and kimchi - £14.

Can't find any of my photos but lots on the google page.

Ribs are fantastic as well, and whisky and beer. It's probably part of the reason for my less than svelte physique ...smile

Went shake shack-canary wharf today.

two burgers, fries and a pint. £24!!!

sure it was tasty, but small. I've eaten nicer stuff at byrons and meat market/liquor. Given the choice again I'd say a freshly made whopper meal from BK for £5 is just as good. if five guys is anything like SS i know not to bother. Probably worth me saying this in the give guys thread too.

I found the taste quite odd, it was almost sharp and too salty. Too much truffle in the mac and cheese as well.

But will be giving it another go in a few weeks
