Los Caracoles is just off Las Ramblas and is one of my favourite restaurants in the world.

Just back yesterday.
La Boqueria on La Rambla for casual seafood dining and an array of foodie stalls.
Loads of good fish restaurants that are casual in Barceloneta down by the harbour.
Tapas 24.
Also at at Disfrutar and His which where both near the hotel and have michelin stars, the first being the better of the two but both excellent.
As for the dogginess and pickpockets on La Rambla, it seemed fine, got offered drugs a few times though but thats the case in a lot of cities. I quite liked walking down the sidestreets off La Rambla at night, Mrs Sy1441 was less than impressed with this lol.

ramblas is fking awful food wise, all touristy rubbish. Opium on the beachfront does lovely food in the day and is a bar and club at night.
Opium, seriously? I'm not sure if it's gone drastically downhill since you were there but "lovely food" isn't how I'd describe it when we visited last month.Acceptable at best. Nice venue and staff however if you enjoy looking at young women wearing nowt much.

Not sure if the OP has already been, but I need to add to this thread with Rossini on Placa Reial.
I've been to BCN 5 times and eaten there each trip - always impeccable. It's strange suggesting Italian food in a fantastic Catalan city, but it is top notch and not too expensive.
In Placa Real, you can see the best restaurant by the number of people in the queue outside during the summer months..... and in the winter months when the locals eat out there as wellI've been to BCN 5 times and eaten there each trip - always impeccable. It's bad but when I think of Barcelona and food I think Bacoa. A handful of Cervezas on La Platja de la Barceloneta and wander towards The W in the evening, into Bacoa and back to crash for a few hours before heading out for the night. Marvellous.
I'm back in a pair of weeks with friends so will make a note of the suggestions here.
