Going to bath in a few weeks with my wife, belated 40th weekend away. Anyone got any good recommendations for restaurants? Tried Sotto sotto but it’s full both nights, type of thing I’m after is ideally somewhere with a gin/cocktail place nearby, food wise open to anything!

I can highly recommend The Dark Horse bar, an amazing cocktail bar. You’ll need to book ahead for a table.

The Priory has a Michelin Star - excellent food and epic cheese trolley. Lovely terrace if its sunny.

Olive Tree also lovely.

Both the above have great accommodation too... and being proper hotels they have excellent bars for your gin requirements!

If it's Bath, it's got to be the Hudson, it's an award winning steak house. The steak's are among the best I've ever had outside of the US/Canada, and even then they rank high. The sides are also excellent and the dessert is too.

It's kind of expensive, but worth it. I try to go there a few times a year.

I'm local. This is the best advice you will get.

Hudson is great, would also recommend it.

Recently went to The Pig hotel, about 15 mins outside of Bath. A great country house/hotel, brilliantly done, and the food was 10/10. Suggest a visit here if it's not too far out of the way.

Jesus. This is the guys 40th!!

We go to the Hudson for our work bashes...

He can’t get into Sotto Sotto so that should give you an idea of what he’s looking for.

Sotto Sotto is vastly overrated.

La Perla next door for tapas is pretty good, also Ole Tapas. The Marlborough Tavern is decent for gastro pub style food. The Scallop Shell is good but not bookable.

It is a short taxi ride (or walk) from the centre but can't recommend Menu Gordon Jones ( http://menugordonjones.co.uk/) highly enough

+1 for Hudsons

I’ve been a few times over the years. Never disappointed.

Knew that was coming at some point ;-)

Guys - thanks for everything so far. Have booked La Perla for the Friday (post Spa, so we can have as much/little etc) and it looks very cool.

Saturday I've pinged the Dark horse to get a table later on, good tip!. Hudsons or Circus look good for Saturday, thinking being that while I want to have a great meal, it's not necessarily the whole focus on the night, we've done that at Peels in Hampton Manor near where we live. Any other options?

Haha - I would go with Hudsons though.

OT: Why do you have 3 similarly capable cars in your garage? a 218d GT, Golf GTD and A6 Avant all do kind of the same thing...curious.

Must update my profile!

218 G/T is the missus/family car - and very good at it too!
I had the A6 which was stolen about 18 months ago. I liked it but wasn't sad when it went. Replaced with a company car reallocation of the GTD for 6 months (absolute hoot, got through a set of fronts in 7000 miles!). That lasted until my new company car was delivered, a 330e. This is OK as a family car but a bit limited in boot space for camping/family holidays/bike carrying etc. However, as a car for me as a work car, it's ideal.
