Dear all,
A friend of mine owns a 1993 Bentley Brooklands. Recently there has been some leaks from the power steering/rack and he's informed me that 'my man said that the whole engine needs to come out to get at the steering rack to execute the necessary replacement of pipes and seals. This seems somewhat strange to me that a pedigree car of this nature would have such an arrangement whereby the whole engine needs to be removed in order to work on the steering rack?'

Googling seems to flag up the issue of the steering rack taking a lot of punishment due to it being a heavy car, but seems silent on needing engine out.

What say the collective? Thanks in advance.

Complete and utter rubbish! My car (98 'R') has had two new racks (first one was faulty) and it is one of the cheaper jobs on these cars and definitely does not need an engine out to do!

Find a new garage sharpish as this guy is either a chancer or knows nothing about these cars and will do more harm than good.

Your friend has been given very bad advice. Not only does the engine not need to come out, but in many cases the rack leaks can be easily fixed at minimal cost. A very well known London dealer advised me to replace the rack on my 1993 Turbo R, having decided to refuse its MOT for that reason. They quoted £2k to replace the rack, which had been refurbished 18 months previously.

My local specialist (who is not just an MOT tester but an examiner of MOT tester) was appalled. He tightened one part of the rack which took him 5 minutes and has completely cured the leak.

100% the rack can be sorted without taking the engine out. Change your mechanic a.s.a.p.
