You could try https://www.sixbaltic.com/ for an evening meal although I think the menu is limited and pretty pricey (for oop North)
I quite like http://thebotanist.uk.com/locations/newcastle The food is nice but not high end. Surroundings are pleasant and you get a great view. They do a nice beer menu if that's your thing. A good selection of Trappist and Belgium beers. Not the cheapest place for drinks though.

Assuming you want to keep within walking distance..... obviously House of Tides as the local Michelin starred place is very good for that kind of special dinner, priced accordingly. 21 as mentioned also very good.
If you don’t mind a 5-10 min taxi Peace and Loaf in Jesmond is in many people’s opinion the best restaurant in the area. A la carte, but they do also do a tasting menu option if you pre-arrange, personally I’d probably stick off the main menu. 1 of those 3 is your best bet for the special dinner.
Lunch, try The Broad Chare excellent food and great choice of bar snacks. Same group as 21, but more relaxed pub feel, nice snug bar downstairs with dining room upstairs. If you like a steak Porterhouse is very good, slightly weird being inside Fenwicks department store but steaks are tremendous, there’s a sister seafood restaurant next to it you can also order from too. And you’re also in the heart of the shopping area if that’s of interest. It’s also part of 21 group, local chef Terry Laybourne has the area sewn up!
Breakfast, Kenny Atkinson’s (House of Tides)missus has a cafe, Violets, on the Quayside which is very nice, also Quay Ingredient and Blake’s.
There’s loads of choice in Newcastle now, don’t go to any of the big chains when there’s so many other options....... you could of course get a Greggs breakfast deal!
If it was me, I’d do Peace and Loaf for dinner, Broad Chare for lunch and Violets for breakfast as my 1st choices.

I'm from Newcastle but only been back in the region a year or so. Many of the places recommended so far are superb, but several I have still to try.
Newcastle has some terrific value places to eat, a few I would recommend are as follows;
Pleased to Meet You on High Bridge (just off Grey Street) is very good and tremendous value, their Head Chef David Kennedy is well known.
My local restaurant in Low Fell 1964 is also to be recommended. Yes, it's going the 'wrong way' out of Newcastle but it's only a couple of miles from your hotel and is superb value for fine dining. There are a couple of decent pubs over this way too such as The Bank and Victoria.
Recent review; https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/whats-on/food-drin...
Bierrex is one of my favourites for lunch, pit grill/smokehouse type place with an amazing beer selection.
Another lunch spot is Barrio Comida, a pop up place on the Quayside down towards the Pitcher and Piano serving tacos.
Finally, if you fancy a curry, my recommendation is Dabbawal on High Bridge (opposite side of Grey to PTMY). They offer some fantastic street food type small plates.

Alternatively, you could try Paradiso http://www.paradiso.co.uk
or
Palace Garden https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g186...
I'm biased as I know the owners of both and they're lovely people. Lunch at Paradiso is cheap and cheerful but the service is brilliant. Palace Garden is dated inside and won't wow you with decor but the food is top notch. You can order from the English Chinese menu but they do a Chinese Chinese menu if you fancy being more authentic.

cheers all, i wade through the info over the weekend.
I have already bagged a table at 21 for the Saturday night meal on the basis that I'd tried to book for House of Tides only to be told it's wait list only for Saturday evening unless I wanted to book for June...21 came very well recommended online and the food / place look good. The Mrs isn't into overly posh/flash places - we've eaten in Michelin 3 stars before and she thinks they can be pretentious / over-priced. She's very low maintenance

We had our Xmas doo at akbar curry near center for life. Very good!
I've been to Akbar's on Waterloo Street a few times now as my friends think it's alright. I think it's crap, very average curry in a rather tacky 'modern' surrounding. The curry is usually over-salted too, to encourage you to buy beer. That said, my friend enjoy it. If you want a curry in Newcastle, the very best is from the Brighton Grove Tandoori, so get a few beers and a takeaway from BGT. The usual big hitters of Peace and Loaf, 21 and House of Tides have already been covered. I've not tried House of Tides but I've heard it's a bit overrated. However, it's unique in the Newcastle area.
The best place to lunch in the town, outside of Chinatown, is Kracklin on Market Street. Their sandwiches are amazing. The best porchetta I've had since leaving Tuscany.

Plenty of gin to try whilst you enjoy some great food - on the very best street in the city. Right in the city centre.

that was already on the list, saw the place on the TV where it got rave reviewsAlso , they have an off shoot on the Quayside which is sort of sub let to different people, it was previously the very good Barrio Comida, it’s currently shut but may be something else by the time you visit. Going on past experience it’ll probably be worth checking out if open, another shipping container building down near the river and Pitcher and Piano.
The bloke who runs them has done very well for himself since starting out on an bike based bbq a few years ago!
