Have had an XKR for two years now and have come into a bit of money so am looking at getting a 2yr old F type R awd. I love the XKR but having previously owned boxsters for 11 years sometimes miss the sportier feel. I also find the XKR a bit tiresome in the wet (or even slightly damp) you just can't get the power down. Another factor is the infotainment system in the XKR, it's a bit slow and clunky to say the least. It will be my only year round car and I wondered if the f type will give me more of that sporty feel, I don't expect it to be a boxster but hope it will be a bit more agile than XKR. Do people think it will be a good move? Budget is around £40k plus the XKR so any other suggestions would be welcome.

Never driven an F-Type but I'd agree with you. Small, hard and fast.

It's not a model for me but they do look good in botanical green smile

Agreed, botanical green is lovely. But you hardly ever see it.

I have a 981 3.4 Boxter S, and I love it! I have driven all the variants in the F Type range, 2.0 4 cylinder, 3.0 V6. 3.0 V6 S, V8, SVR in coupe and convertible bodies! Yes, it is a good car, even in 2.0 power, and I know exactly what I would do, given your situation. Why get rid of the XKR, when it has lost most of its value, which has to turn round and probably appreciate soon, when you could put your money into a late 981 Boxter S, that are also holding their value, and at the same time, a more enjoyable car to drive?
I would ask myself, why would I want to put my £65/£70 into something that is losing money at a fair rate of knots, when I can have two cars that are on the edge of becoming more and more desireable?
The 981 3.4 Boxter S was not described as the best sub £100,000 sports car for no reason!!!! The only downside that I can see is, having the facility to keep the two cars, and the small expense of taxing, insuring, and maintaining both cars!!

Exactly the same reasons as me. I am activley keeping my eye out for an FTR AWD. It is brutal, maybe not as special as the ‘classic’ XKR and it is no Boxster. It would be a good daily good daily driver. Considered a 911?

Did this last November. Sold my white 2011 XKR and bought a white F type R. Now I can compare the two being so resent.

This is how I have found things so far.

The F type is more exciting to drive than the XKR.
XKR is a bit dated now compared to the F type.
The R model exhaust sounds epic.
The ride in the F type isn't as comfortable as the XKR.
I think the seats are slightly more comfortable in the XKR
Less room in the F type ( no rear seats and boot slightly smaller)
MPG about the same.
Road tax the same.
Tyre's about the same price.
Build quality about the same.
Feels a nicer place to be in the F type.
Serving, Not sure. The F type isn't due one yet, so can't comment.
I seem to get more attention in the F type than I did in the XKR.( may be not a good thing)

Over all. I miss my old XKR but the F type is a move on.

You should do it.
Good luck
JT

Interesting comparison, thanks. But any comparison is a bit invalid because they're separated by two things - market niche and time.

If I was in charge of Jaguar there'd be a current 'XK' luxury grand tourer (to whistle you down to Chamonix and get out feeling fresher than when you got in) and the stunning XK180 as the hairy-arsed sports car (for going sideways round bends and shaking your fillings out). Oh and the R-Coupe (evolution of S-Type) for the rest, with a convertible option, and a modern XJ that doesn't look like a hideous barge. We'll leave 2.0 4-pots with black plastic trim to the rest smile

Many thanks for all the replies. I don't have space for two cars so the boxster plus XKR idea is out, plus boxsters are just too slow. Part of the reason I got the XKR was I was getting fed up of being out dragged by hot hatches and diesel beemers. At least in the XKR you need something properly fast to out drag it (providing it's dry wink ). Plus the F type is faster still. I've also considered a 911 but it would be 5+ yrs old for the same money and again not as fast and not as 'special' (at least to me). I'd have 991 turbo in a shot though but they are way out of my budget. Plus I had all sorts of things go wrong in both of my Boxsters whereas the XKR has been rock solid reliable. I know the F type won't handle as well as the Porsches but I rarely do track days and on normal roads the F type will handle well enough for me.wobble

I sold my XKR after only a year or so for basically the same reasons. It was beautiful, sounded great and look the part but it simply could not put down its power in anything other than perfectly dry conditions - which are a bit of a rarity here in Scotland.

I miss it - because now I don't have a big sexy beast of a car - but I much prefer driving my little Megane 275 Cup-S if I'm honest.

Having said all of that I'm still stupid enough to be looking at things like the C63 AMGs (old 6.2l version) on the internet and trying to concinve myself it makes sense!
