We had about 90-100 guests,

Just checked our wine order. We had:

24 bottles each of Rose/Red/White
42 bottles of Sparkling Rose (wife doesn't like champagne)

It worked out about a bottle of each per 5 guests, don't forget water though!

Had a few cases left over afterwards, but that was because table wine had to be cleared after food service, as venue had a bar and wasn't providing catering.

On the plus side, the Calais based wine merchant we bought it from, paid for a eurotunnel crossing for us as well, and we managed to fit it all in a 3 series along with another half dozen cases of random wines for family.

Not quite the same but I organised a formal dinner in London a few weeks ago.

The 53 guests (all adults but 3 non drinkers) drank:-

19 bottles of bubbly
25 bottles of white wine
23 bottles of red wine
9 bottles of desert wine
2 bottles of brandy
2 bottles of port
64 bottles of Peroni

The white/red wine ratio is skewed as 2 white wine courses and only one red wine course if that makes sense.
Was the desert wine sweet or dry...?

2 bottles of wine per person minimum, and more likely 3, if it’s anything like my friends.

At our wedding (110, I think), they drank a shade under half a bottle per person (something like .46).

They also supped 17 gallons of beer mind.

for 126 guests, 4 of which were children and maybe 10/15 non or low drinkers...... we had the following:

fizz- 60 bottles
white- 68 bottles
red- 60 bottles
rose- 12 bottles
beers- 200 bottles
cider- 40 bottles

mini jäger- 96 shots/ mini bottles
mini buckfast- 36 shots/ mini bottles (on the tables for the reception/ party!)

we had more than enough to let most of the day. after dinner they opened a cash bar for spirits etc..... and that didn’t get used too much. everyone seemed to behave themselves and no-one got crazy drunk or took the piss.

Got married in Ireland.

200 guests.

Bought the wine and champers.

The rule was to budget 1/2 bottle of wine per person over there plus the equivalent of two glasses champers. Oh, and you pay for the bar during the duration you're faffing about doing the wedding photos. Still no one took the piss, and whilst the Emerald Isle is famed for the Black drink, the bar bill wasn't too bad as older people don't drink so much as the wedding goes on for many hours, there are kids there that don't drink, there are still quite a few people who take the "pledge" and don't drink, and also.................

.........because all the natives wait until one of the foreign contingent at the wedding (i.e. my mates from England) goes to the bar and offers a "round". I think the worst I heard of was one guy getting hit for £270!!!! (Despite me warning everyone after I'd fallen for the same a decade earlier at my 1st Irish wedding).

We had 80 people for the day, Pimms/champagne, reception in the courtyard, served by the girls on staff.

Then the bar opened...inside..everyone went back outside with more drinks hehe

Got everyone sat down, in the dinning area.

Glass of champagne poured for the toast per person, on the table.

We only provided 1x red and white (per table of 8), bottled water & fresh orange juice. (If more was required the venue replaced as necessary, one table went through 7 bottles, another 1/2 a bottle). For the meal, the service staff spotted the drinkers and kept them well oiled, as well as the non drinkers too with the soft drinks.

Bar re opened, and more Champagne/Pimms run around, as the tables were removed for the evening, everyone went outside or in the secondary area as the main hall was prepared for the band & dancing, we opened up the second bar/area for tea/coffee, and kept the courtyard and terrace for the drinkers.

Another 200 people for the evening, kept both bars opened.

You’ll be quite surprised just how many people don’t drink.

But don’t run out!

Edit..

We did not have a table plan (on purpose), worked for us...

So we had 145 guests, 2 hour champagne reception, 4 course dinner, and approx 4 hours of partying afterwards, and bought the following:

160 champagne
108 white
108 red
10L Gin
10L Vodka
5L Tequila
400 bottles of beer

We drank:

100 champagne
70 white
60 red
6L Gin
4L Vodka
2L Tequila
300 bottles of beer

So had loads leftover, managed to return some and we're still drinking the rest!

We based ours on some daft calculation like that. Don't think we went 2 bottles per head but probably 1 bottle per person plus beer and other stuff.

Had so much over at the end that I don't think we bought any wine for at least 6 months and were drinking Champagne for any old occasion (e.g. it's Wednesday). Worst bit was ditching the remains of the draught beer I'd got from a local brewery, I tried my best to drink as much as I could but the stuff was only really good for a week to 10 days cry

We had 140 guests at ours. Tables of 10 so got 2 bottles of red (Shiraz) and 2 bottles of white (Pinot Grigio - 10 yrs ago when it was in fashion) per table. Had some left over but not a massive amount, the most frustrating part was where a bottle had been opened and only a glass drunk, I think my dad made the most of those as he'd paid for them.

Can't remember how much fizz we bought.

We got the wine from Sainsburys. We'd decided a little while in advance which we liked, so when it came on offer we bought loads of it. Coupled with a promotion of 'buy 6 or more and get 25% off' we did well, came in some way below the hotel price even once corkage taken into account.

hopefully i don’t ever need to organise another one!!! but we did have a slightly diy wedding, the venue didn’t have a proper bar. As there was no way for people to get anything to drink, we wanted to make sure we had plenty and provided drinks from straight after the ceremony thru until after dinner. also the venue didn’t charge corkage, so was better to go overboard than have thirsty guests. i did have a number of friends say how they didn’t have to buy drinks all day, as there was always bottles of wine kicking around, which was exactly what we wanted to happen!

also don’t scrimp on soft drinks/ water, as we ended up with a roasting hot day and most people wanted something else to drink that wasn’t alcoholic!

For a simialr size wedding we budgeted on:

3 glasses of Prosecco per guest at reception
A 40 pint keg of beer for the non-fizz drinkers
1/2 bottle of wine per guest for dinner
1 glass of Champagne per guest for toasts

Cash bar for everything else.

That was about right, we had some wine left over, I had perhaps over-estimated the ability of my friends to drink like fish.

Everyone concentrates on the wine for the table, but a couple of weddings I had been to before ours had got that right but massively underestimated the amount required to fill that gap between ceremony and wedding breakfast where people are milling around for photos and the caterers are sorting everything out. Our instruction to the caterer in that regard was to make sure nobody's glass ran dry, so we over-ordered on fizz, wasn't exactly a hardship to drink the unopened cases in the months afterwards. Majestic in Calais were very helpful in this regard - one of their deals where you order a certain amount and they pay the Eurostar ticket. Had an enjoyable weekend in Calais on the collection run.

Wedding reception venue was chosen because a) it was a great location and b) no corkage.

That list sounds like a good weekend at my house when my mate comes round.

Enough bubbles for 1.5-2x decent glasses each. Assuming this doesn't include the glass on entry.

Enough wine to have 1 bottle per adult on each table, plus 20% extra in reserve.

It's never a pain to have too much.

It is when the OP suggested they could "polish off" any extras at a rate of one to two bottles a montheek
