Yeah, to get tofu with a decent texture buy the extra firm stuff and press it under some thing heavy for at least half an hour.

I cover it in kitchen towel and change it after 15 minutes when I’m doing it.

Two plates and a heavy weight are all you need for a tofu press laugh.

A couple of other good options for vegan katsu are celeriac braised in a miso stock before you bread and fry them or sweet potato slices.

I noticed that Birds eye have a new range of vegan bits made from pea protein. I'm compelled to try any new vegan things I see so I picked up the meatballs and made sandwiches last night.

Just a fairly basic tomato sauce, violife cheese and the balls on some ciabatta.

They were pretty good. The texture wasn't as good as the linda mccartney ones but still pretty good. I'd had the meatless farm burgers before which also use pea protein and found them quite mealy but these were much better.

I was dubious about them, what with Birds Eye's reputation for making not so great frozen meat stuff and the list of ingredients was lengthy (mostly recognisable things though, just a lot of flavourings) but I was pleasantly surprised.

We regularly have Fry’s brand pies, our favourites being the peppered steak ones.
I like those pies, I get them because my favourite chippy meal was a steak pie supper and I sometimes still crave it laugh.

There isn’t a collective vegan hive mind so there are some differences in how you view veganism.

A friend of mines went on holiday to a small island up north that had wild (feral?) chickens. Apparently they’d been left behind at some point when someone abandoned a small holding. She ate the eggs she found lying around while there.

I’d like to keep rescued battery hens once I get a garden and I’d Probably eat any eggs they lay.

I’ve been eating like trash this week so I’ve been trying to have a good day today.

Made garlicky mushrooms and tomatoes on fresh bread for breakfast, didn’t take a picture because I was hungover and had munched it before I was functional.

Made a vegetable hash for dinner. Rubbish picture below.

Aye, there are a few different vegan square sausages. Simon Howie even does one you can get in supermarkets (although that one has palm oil).

Sgaia's is my favourite, it's no a cheap breakfast though. About £4 for a pack of 4.

Yeah, I mean it’s not like you get any other foods where block is an accepted description.

Just weirdo vegan fare.

Have you got a specific recipe or do you know what they're called?

King oyster mushrooms are pretty meaty and they're pretty easy to get, some supermarkets and pretty much any decent asian supermarket will have them.

I have mixed feelings about the giant fast food chains doing vegan food. Obviously it's good from their pov and it's always handy to have a bit more choice if you're stuck for somewhere to eat.

Depending on why your vegan, it seems a bit hypocritical to give a company like McDs your business though. From an environmental and animal rights viewpoint they are very damaging.

I realise picking at that thread is dangerous because you start looking at supermarkets and the companies that produce the food you eat at home and you end up at the point where you can only eat what you grow in your garden laugh.

I'm not perfect by any means, I've had my fair share of greggs vegan sausage rolls. It's just something that bothers me every time I see one of these articles.

Would be nice to keep this thread to pics / recipes / inspiration and leave the moral debates for elsewhere.
Which post/s are you referring to?

If it’s the one before yours this may help....

If it’s mine then I was responding to the OP’s post.
I don’t think we need to be super strict on what people post. As long as it’s not completely off topic or deliberately antagonistic then I think we’re good.

I had another go at vegan macaroni cheese the other day. Wasn’t right, I hadn’t soaked the cashews for long enough so it didn’t blend complete smooth and I put too much mustard in. Was still tasty enough to eat though.

Standard awful picture.

Upside down as well. A new low laugh.

Wtf are those things - nuggets?!
Aye Quorn vegan nuggets. I didn't want to dirty a plate so I just dumped them on top of the macaroni and ate it out of the pot.

“Pulled” king oyster mushrooms as mentioned above, this time with A&O shawarma rub. Bloody lovely.
That actually looks amazing, I'll need to give it a go.

I was in a big sainsburys that seemed to have quite a lot of stuff. They had both types of the kebab style stuff and a few different burgers. Maybe some kind of pulled jackfruit as well.

More supermarkets have them now but you should be able to get them at any decent sized Asian supermarket.

Oh they look good, I've seen some strong root stuff in my local morrison's but I don't think I've seen those.

Yeah, the Quorn stuff looks the same going in as coming out (of the oven I should say), which can be little confusing. Scratches that comfort food itch though laugh.

Tried vegan black pudding this morning.

It was pretty good, as usual with these types of thing it wasn’t really like black pudding but it was tasty.. The rolls also had tattie scones and brown sauce on them.

Who needs a tofu press laugh.

Making chipotle tofu nachos. I’ll try and remember to take a pic once it’s done.

ha! i can never get tofu right - tried pressing it for ages the other day and it had holes in and crumbled when i tried to cut it?
You don't want to press it for too long or under a lot of weight as it can effect the texture. This was the cauldron stuff which is kind of weird as it's a bit more crumbly than the usual stuff I use but worked fine for the smashed tofu effect I was going for.

I usually use the House Foods extra firm tofu if I'm cutting it up, very dense and even texture. Press it for 45 mins or so, if you're using some sort of home brew pressing method like mines, cover the tofu in paper towel and change it after about 30 mins. The second set of paper should be almost dry.

Was at Bread Meats Bread in Glasgow last night, I've been mad at them for a while as they'd stopped doing their Fried Chicken style Sietan but they've just added a double B12 cheese burger with all the trimmings to the menu and it was exactly the kind of messy burger you want when you go out. Wasn't cheap at £12 but it was a lot of food.

This place has been getting a lot of hype but I've not had a chance to go yet. It's next on my list.

Agreed, the whole thing looks a bit Wetherspoons imo.

Good to see restaurants here starting to use the Beyond burger though. I prefer it to that B12 burger most restaurants use.

I got takeaway from Bread Meats Bread the other day, which means that I've been there twice in a week. Should probably knock that on the head laugh.

B12 Cheeseburger was good but the real treat was the fries with vegan blue cheese mayo and buffalo sauce. Had a really good blue cheese flavour and a proper kick from the sauce. Food cost £14 and the chips would've been enough for two if you wanted to share.
