I should have quoted Robert. He was talking in particular about the service charge. I wouldn't want to pay a service charge in the Parts Dept if i bought pads but I might tip the mechanic who fitted them.

Have I ever tipped a mechanic? Can't think. I've tipped the breakdown man on the few occasions I've needed one.

It's not about being big, it's about an expression of gratitude. It's oiling the wheels.

It's nice we're all different.

I’m going to guess Toxicnerve doesn’t sell brake pads for a living.

It's okay, he's on commission.

Only tip if you feel like your want to and then only when you receive exceptional service.
Your in a posh hotel, very good service should be normal.
Enjoy. And don’t forget to steal the slippers!

hehe That’s the spirit!

Seriously though, just relax. Taking bags to room - that’s just a one off, €1 per bag - no biggy. Round up bar/restaurant bills aiming for 10%. Shop in hotel etc - nil. I disagree about it needing to be exceptional service but agree about not tipping for poor service.

I always think a good ‘attitude’ test is whether people tip on Uber. All done via the app after the event so no potential for awkward interaction. People that don’t tip because it’s easy not to = tight. Again, if it was st service I wouldn’t tip.

A good example of the guilt and self-loathing felt by non-tippers. smile

What 'guilt and self-loathing'are you referring to, I haven't seen any similar comment on this thread?

People just object to being expected to give a tip, even if the service is poor. Do you agree with that, or not ?

The hyperbolic “Jesus wept”.

I don’t ever feel I’ve been expected to tip for poor service. If a service charge is shown and service was poor I’ll either reduce or delete it depending on how “poor”. Not difficult and nothing to get stressed about!

What a strange reaction. Why the need for 'Jesus wept' and 'getting stressed', neither of which were necessary.
I expect you'll start some more silliness in response.. Excuse me in advance if I ignore it.

Sorry, I didn’t realise you were looking for a childish argument and mistakenly posted a serious response.

Glad to see you’ve managed to conclude the argument yourself though. smile

good service should be anywhere you go. The staff are paid to work there, paid to take your order and bring out your food, someone is paid to cook your order. it's in the business' interest they give good service and food in order to have you come back or tell others, not for you to you have to pay extra for it. That's a strange sense of entitlement.

this reminds me. I was at a pub in shoreditch afew months back. Went in, asked for a pint (hoeegarden), they asked me if i was drinking inside or outside, i said inside. i asked them why it matters. They said they charge more if you drink inside.
WTF?

Whatever you do, don't go to any tourist destinations in Italy if you think that's bad.

I've seen one price for eating at the bar, a higher price for inside, and top price for outside.

Did they tell you why? The only reason I have been asked if I am drinking outside is because they were not allowed glass outside they had to give you a plastic glass.

the actual non-tippers I've known have no shame, so "guilt and self-loathing" isn't something they'd understand.

Tipping is stupid, there is no other industry where you go in, and then pay more for something that should be included in the price

No one goes into Tesco and then tips the woman on the till because she went out of her way to get you some bags, it’s all part of the job!

I bet no one tips the man in the shell garage when they pump the fuel for you

How about tipping the man who carried your heavy slabs from B&Q to the car?
No tipping in Japan and Australia. Not saying that no-one EVER tips, but it is not expected. In Japan there is a degree of embarrassment if tips are offered.

I think that is part of the problem in this country is a lot of people dont really know where to stand on the tips front. In the US its very tip orientated and totally expected. As you say in Japan & Australia the opposite, here we are sort of stuck not knowing what to do
