I went for a meal on Friday night. Table of four next to ours had a £150 bill (they were discussing how to split it). As the youngish waiter was collecting plates one of the guests literally threw a rolled up £5 note in his face saying "here's your tip". Absolute co(kwomble

No idea why this is a perennial subject on PH...seems to come up every three months..
However, DM article today seems about right:

And how did you feel that the waiter served them through the entire meal?

Exactly. If I tip it makes no difference to anybody but me & the waiter. If I don't it's the same. No really worth getting excited about.

It does get interesting though if you are with people who take the opposite view to you.

Ah, at the end of the day I tip and I think people should tip if they get good service and have the opportunity. Whether it's leaving 10% on a restaurant bill, buying a bar person a drink, telling a delivery driver to keep the change or chucking a quid in a tip jar when you see one.

Some places specifically say not to tip and that's cool. I know a few places that pay the living wage and either suggest a charitable donation or something like that. One place runs a pay it forward service where the money you would tip goes into a fund to cover free meals for people who are struggling.

Whether you tip or don't tip is your decision.

I look forward to next week's thread laugh.

Agreed. Was in a place in the States last week which was no tipping - money to charity named on the blackboard.

I think the PH sociopaths struggle with the custom and etiquette side of life and simply disappear down a black hole of whatabouts and what ifs - “ why not supermarket shelf fillers”, “I’m already paying”, “it’s their job” etc etc.

No doubt one will be along shortly in the guise of ‘free thinker’ not being a sheep etc. Try and convince yourself if you like but the correct definition is ‘miserable tight git’!

This week I’ve tipped the taxi driver who brought me home from the airport, the guy who looked after me koi pond while away and the man who spent 3 hours cleaning my carpets for £70 yesterday.

I find that if I look after tradesmen they’ll come back when I need them.

Restaurants are another matter.

Jesus fking Christ ITS NOT ABOUT BEING TIGHT. Just add 10% to the food and drink and do away with tipping.

You're wasting your time, that's why I gave up bothering.

The last thread was about how restaurants are too expensive and adding gratuity is a con so you can't make everyone happy laugh.

VAT gets added in that scenario meaning the price goes up by 12% not 10.

If you genuinely don’t mind paying the 10% I can’t see why it matters whether it is baked in or a separate line item.

I think the real issue is many people are unable to handover money for something which is optional as they are intrinsically tight arses who have never worked in the service industry.

People who don’t tip are invariably infrequent restaurant goers in 90% of cases.

10% added to a couple of beers brought to the table is what - £1, £2 if 2 or 3 rounds?
Why should the waiter get 10% of a bottle of £100 champagne?

I don't know about other people here but people I know don't tip like that in bars.

If there's a tip jar I'll stick change in it, if not I'll get the bar person to stick a drink on for themselves every couple of rounds.

If you're running a tab then you tip on the total when you're settling up.

You don't tip a percentage on every drink you have.

Are you saying that people who work in the service industry are begging

I can tell you that for a lot of service industry workers, a good week of tips can be the difference between subsistence and comfortable living.

Why should he or she get anything at all? Because you have chosen to enter that establishment, chosen to buy that drink and the conditions of doing so are that there is an expectation that good service will be met with some level of monetary appreciation.

I'm getting fed up of this americanised approach to service. I provide a service every day albeit behind a desk and no bugger I've serviced has every sent me a wadge of money - and if they did I'd have to declare it!

Automatic tips added to the bill is even worse!

I’m not sure how you got that from my post but clearly I’m not, no. I’m saying if you had worked in it, you would appreciate the value and meaning of tips to those who receive them.

This argument is illogical and selfish though “I don’t get tips so why should I give them”.

Again, if you have never received a tip, you can’t appreciate the gift of giving them....
