Surely anyone only ever buys this crap when they're drunk, so the cost is irrelevant as you're not thinking straight?
A chicken doner/shish is quite healthy That said, once in a while, and only on top of a full tank of bitter, a nice greasy doner is something you need to do.

Being an old git.... (mid 50's) it's many years since I have had a kebab..... as many years that I have not been a young single bloke 'out on the lash', with similarly inebriated 'mates'. And when you remind yourself of the hygiene record of late night kebab, you'll know why...
kebabarrhoea n. medic. What one suffers from the morning after
kebable n. The incoherent mumblings used to order food after the pubs have closed
kebabbledash n. The semi-durable rendering compound found adorning the pavements and wall around the local 'dubious meat' emporium
kebabe n. The sort of woman who is looks incredibly tasty when pissed at 2am. But less so in the cold light of day.
kebab compass n.
1) Drunken navigation system (discarded lettuce etc) used to retrace one steps during his 'walk of shame'
2) The hand held device waved around by pissheads in an attempt to find their front door
abra-kebabra n. A magical illusion - performed after a night on the piss - whereby the typical Turkish delicacy is made to disappear down the performer's throat... before miraculously reappearing a short while later - down the back of a taxi driver's head.

Kebabampylobacter n. The entertaining habit of a chicken-containing kebab consumer's digestive system to turn itself completely and violently inside-out, over a prolonged period.

Where's Corbyn and McDonnell on these matters of national importance; too busy making up sh*t on the NHS, I tell thee.
Can you imagine a nationalized kebab service? Bloody thing would close at 5:30pm, only open 4 days a week (no weekends) and have 8 weeks off a year.i'm near you OP and i've noticced the same thing. it wasn't long ago i could buy a large kebab for £5 at my locals, now they're £7-8. the quality never improved either. the price of chips hasnt gone up, the price of fried chicken hasnt gone up either. my local chinese takeaways never went up in price either.
even more bizarrely because of the price increase the price difference between a doner and buying a kofte/shish isn't much different (50p-£1)/ before the difference used to be huge/.
really makes you wonder, as a normal 2pc fried chicken meal is £3, and it comes with a drink. it actually makes me want to order a kebab less now. and instead go to the nicer turkish grill restaurant, which is high quality, fresh, tons of sides...and only costs £1 more..

From £4.90 to £6.50 is simply not cricket. However looking from another angle maybe the business is struggling to break even at £4.90.
To me it’s an eye opener. In the big scheme of things of course I can absorb it but 33% is too much.
How many people will stop buying and thus their rise is counterproductive?
For £6.50 I’ll swerve and spend 7 quid and go to a proper Turkish restaurant nearby (Barkingside) and have a balls out blowout. Fresh piping hot Turkish bread in a basket. 2 x dips. A whole plate of food (rice/cous cous/chicken shish/peppers) and be waited on.
Anecdotal, I was in Hounslow a few weeks ago and had an amazing feed for a fiver! It could have fed an army!! A basic “curry cafe”.

Generally kebabs are pretty pricey round here (Epsom, Surrey) but there’s a kebab shop near my girlfriends house which does the best kebabs and isn’t stupidly expensive. We got a mixed chicken kebab, large chicken shish and large portion of chips for £19 from there last week. Bargain!

You lot can stick your Laandan prices!
Festival Fish Bar in Cannock; run by Indians and they have a proper naan bread oven, so their Chicken Tikka Kebab in (real) naan bread is superb and only £6.05. They also do battered chips. Bostin'!
As an incomer, I have to say the concept and execution of bright orange battered chips is a heinous abomination! ^^ is that the one on Pye Green Road? not far from my outlaws if so. We'll check it out,

I fancied a pretty healthy chicken doner takeaway from a shop a bit out of the way.
They admittedly do a superb kebab. The place is near my parents East London/Essex. The highly miserable dystopian Ilford South..
I was there a few weeks ago and paid £4.90 for a (small) kebab which is the going rate in the area being circa a fiver.
I duly ordered my kebab last night and was asked to pay £6.50. I obviously thought there must be some mistake and said I wanted small not medium or large.
The girl said prices have increased and that she was sorry. I said this was well over a 30% increase! All other prices have gone up.
I can handle 5-10% however 33% is properly taking the pi$$ in my book. It's utterly outrageous in fact.
They might want to read up on the concept of the “Laffer curve”. If KFC et al pulled a stroke like that there would riots on the street!!!
I know the Government are statistical liers and that their figs are shall we say "embellished". I have noticed stuff going up in the UK but this was a real eye opener.
Pret prices are nudging up for instance. Oh well. I suppose we can blame Brexit or suchlike... I hope this is not a sign of things to come..

The local one to me that raised their prices massively are new owners too, they also seem to have lots of different staff, some of whom don't seem that experienced so i have lost confidence with them, an utter shame as i gone to that place for 10-15years as its my local, but these new owners have ruined it. I went to a kebab place in town and noticed a couple of people who used to work at my local ended up working there! Their food was better, fresher, and a tad cheaper too. the one in town has a huge footfall, where as the one local to me might only have people who live within half a mile go there.
my local kebab £7. and you get
pitta (lucky if they even heat it up and give it a char)
generic salad
cheap elephant leg doner. sometimes curled up and dried because of how long its been in the pot.
kebab in town £6
cooked pita, with a nice char
generic salad better than the locals
elephant leg that tastes nicer, more likely to be fresher too.
turkish place in town £8
freshly made bread that's grilled over coal/wood on an open grill
amazing fresh salad
rice
bulgarwheat/couscous salad
doner meat that's incredibly tasty, you can see the layers of meat and fats within it.
+ a pot of house made ttasty turkish chili sauce + the white sauce. all in all so much food you're bursting. and sometimes they give you a free little dessert afterwards to clean your palette

and loads of turkish places in the old town offering all sorts of grilled meat - delicious
