I don't have any real access to UK shops but I picked these up from Tesco and they were way better than any of the normal frozen chip options I've seen. They were expensive though, 3 euros for 1 portion. I just had a look and they're £2 in UK

I tried these @ a year ago and was very impressed. So I bought them again recently and they were awful. Some still hard, a bit greasy, not great. I read the reviews, some of which said ' these used to be great but.....'.

A lot of oven chips now seem to be batter-coated, which I don't want. As above, making your own isn't too hard if you don't have too many to cook for.

I remember a few Summers ago Tesco had something similar to these but they were Tesco Finest Salt and Vinegar chips. They tasted like soft and fluffy chips you would get from a proper chippy if you left them I the bag for half an hour. Never had supermarket chips like them since.

The worst frozen chips I've tasted came from M&S, some beer battered rubbish, absolutely disgusting, they smelt like a piss stained alleyway when cooking and tasted like nothing, no flavour at all.

Lidl Maris Piper deluxe oven chips for me have been the best i have tried so far, and they agree(best potato product) :

https://www.thegrocer.co.uk/the-grocer-own-label-a...

"At £1.95 for 1.5kg, these chunky chips were “stunning value” said our panel of experts. “Well seasoned” with “great taste”, there was a “good contrast” between the “crispy” outside and “fluffy” inside. Shoppers loved the “upmarket” look of the packaging and the “excellent size” of the chips - which they said were better than those from some leading brands"
I mentioned these back in the thread. Couldn’t agree more.
Before anyone buys these, that review is for the chips from their previous supplier which were excellent.

Like a lot of branded stuff in the supermarkets, Lidl has changed their supplier but kept the same packaging.

Unfortunately the new supplier’s chips are crap as they have some sort of crispy coating on the outside.

The Aldi version are ok, although not quite as good as the old version Lidl.
An update to this. The last bag we had, half the chips were normal, the other half were those bright orange coated things. A weird mixed batch. This latest bag, bought this week, were just the usual uncoated loveliness.

You can also spice them up - hot caymans pepper, garlic cloves Tabasco and jalapeños in olive oil mega chunky with skin on.

It’s not healthy —- so I don’t do it that often a year but when I do 2 le cruset roasting pans full.

i was about to buy these from iceland but then read reviews on how their own-brand stuff taste just as good (and are much cheaper). it didn't disappoint.
nowi just need to find out what five guys use to season their fries so i can emulate that with these.

Its a pre made mix made in the states unavailable over here to purchase off the shelf. I make my own which is great. I’ll dig the link out for you.

Bought the ALDI triple cooked beef dripping chips... gotta say that I'm not really that impressed. They just seemed abit dry were something you really had to have to eat with a condiment otherwise it's not that enjoyable. I also bought the McCains skin on fries (that look similar to the iceland version as the icelad one was sold out at the time) and they didn't seem to taste as good as the iceland one..

For me at least, the iceland skin on fries are top.

I do have some of the aldi skin on fries which I'll try eventually,

I have a neff oven with circotherm. Par boiling and cooking in beef dripping in that oven makes something far better than the store bought stuff. Usually buy Maris pipers.

Oh I see, that triple fry lark.

Personally if i want healthier chips I peel and oven cook. Otherwise go down the chippy

But fair enough.
I prefer wedges, usually skin on. Less faffing about.

McCain regular oven chips.

They go crispy, they're not greasy. We don't have them often (none for me due to Keto rolleyes), but they are consistent.

Further update on this. I tried the ALDI skin on fries....

Very good.

They tasted much like the iceland ones. These are definately my favourite and will be my go-to chips. I think mainly because the outside manages to maintain a rough/crispy exterior, much like the fries you get from Five guys (obviously nowhere near as good).

The Aldi skin on fries are the favourite in our house.

I'm a fan of what I would call a "medium cut" chip/frie, like you get in Nandos and used to in KFC until they went over to horrific skin-on. All the supermarkets and brands seemed to only do thin fries or fat chips and Booker only did medium cut in a deep fry version. I then discovered these:

For a regular midweek eating they are great. Weekends I'll make my own fat chips from scratch.

I do like a good thread revival, especially for something as important as chips.

I often go upmarket with mine and do them myself, chip the potatoes, I use a 5mm chip, into cold water in saucepan bring up to a simmer and drain, let them dry and toss in olive oil and salt and pepper or whatever you want, into a hot oven 15-20 mins toss around on the baking sheet half way. I like them, other people love them.

I’d have to disagree, I find them too greasy. Her in doors would agree with you though.
