It's not available until end of March, but I think this is going to be a gamechanger. I would advise anyone to pre-order.

There are no other flat burr, single dose grinders at anywhere close to this or a Niche's price point.

As someone said on the coffee forum, this grinder is simply the result of a market that has been *extremely* slow to catch up on the huge success of the Niche. It's nearly unbelievable how no manufacturer has decided to act on this new single-dosing revolution.

Eureka and Rancilio are also preparing to launch single dose Grinders.

Which type of burr would be best for home use? I had always presumed that the conical burr, like the Niche, was better due to the ‘flow’ of the beans / grounds?

It's a hard question to answer.

The general consensus is that flat burrs work better with light roasts, so based on that, a flat burr version of the Niche is a lot of peoples 'holy grail'.

Some disagree. You're right in regards to 'flow'. Flat burr flow means a single doser is difficult to design. You'll notice on the solo, there is a little 'pump' at the top which pushes the last of the grounds through by air pressure.

Flatt burrs and conical burrs grind the bean differently, resulting in a different taste. If you dial in both grinders to a 30 second shot, and pull an espresso using the same beans, they would taste different. It's hard to say which is better. You'd probably even prefer some beans ground with conical and some with flat.

Like I said earlier, it's generally thought that flat burrs unlock more flavours in light roasts. Most of the people who are into third wave coffee enjoy light roasts, so flat burrs are often preferred.

On that basis, I'm very interested in the Solo.

Dave Corbey, who helped with the design and development of the Niche has used the Solo. He says it's good and basically a flat burr version of the Niche, so I think they'll sell loads.

Hmm, I'm very tempted now you've said that, given the difficulty of getting a Niche. 1g exchange vs 0.3 g exchange I assume is going to be fairly minimal difference?

That said I like the looks of the Niche more.

Looking good Raymond.

The Gaggia Classic should give you a nice dry puck of coffee in the porta filter when it’s finished. You can dig it out with a spoon, or your finger under a running tap but I really enjoy giving it a good hard whack into a knock box. It’s very satisfying. They are not expensive and the sound it makes will have you thinking you are in a cafe rather than your kitchen.

Good shout. That's going on the shopping list, along with a nicer tamper!

I'm tempted too. If reviews are favorable, I might get one and compare directly next to the Niche. If there is an obvious preference, sell the other.

I think both look pretty awful (aesthetically) unfortunately! That carbon wrap on the Solo is horrible. It might look good stripped off and powder coared.

I'll be very interested to hear if you can taste the CARAMEL CHOCOLATE, SWEET PANELA, RED AND YELLOW FRUITS or the DRIED PLUMS, RAISIN, ROASTED HAZELNUTS, TOFFEE from the above.

I've tried a few different varieties over the last week or two. Not yet sure what my favourite is so far - they are all a bit different in a way I can't define.

I can appreciate there is some overlap between coffee and dark chocolate. And maybe the type of roasting gives some kind of burnt coffee/caramel flavour. I did get one type a while back for Aeropress that did have some hint of orange flavour - not unpleasant.

But I really don't get any of the other subtle flavours from the tasting notes of the coffees I have bought and suspect this is mostly just marketing with a hint of the Emperor's New Taste Buds. What is are yellow fruits anyway? Banana? Lemon? Grapefruit? That really does sound like you could just make up anything - like they do with wine:

I can tell the difference between Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi, so my palate is not completely hopeless.

You'll get some of those flavours for sure, if you have them black. Particularly of you have them drip filtered, long.

I was given an unsweetened iced coffee with tasting notes of blackcurrant last summer and it had a lovely 'Ribena' flavour to it. Really refreshing.

It's hard to pinpoint a lot of them, but very easy to distinguish between the basics. Chocolatty, nutty, citrus, raisin, peachy, creamy - most of us will pick them out. Taking 'nutty' to cashew over hazelnut is where it becomes a bit subjective.

I had 'champagne' as a tasting note on an expensive bean and it was uncanny.

Btw, anyone saying "I want coffee to taste like coffee, not Ribena" doesn't really understand what tasting notes are.

I know what you mean. I've had a few coffees from the Yellow Catuai beans now. In a flat white, I couldnt really pick out any tasting notes as to be expected i suppose, but in an espresso and Americano I can definitely taste toffee and nuts, although as RTT says, not hazelnuts specifically. Maybe as I get to grips with the machine or if I had a better grinder I would be able to taste more flavours, I don't know. But agreed that yellow fruits etc is a bit vague.

If the Solo is as good as it looks, it will definitely take away some of that demand next month
