As the wife has been forced to go vegan for medical reasons, and the kids are veggies, we tried one from Gaulthier for Xmas Day. http://www.gauthiersoho.co.uk/

To be honest, I was disappointed - but I had a whole packet of pigs in blankets, so it's ok hehe

On the other hand, the wine was fantastic - they source their own wine from French vineyards directly and had around 20% off.

Some friends did the Hawksmoor package before Christmas and said it was excellent. As you would expect
Just looked at that site ....... yikes at the price.
Of course you can diy it for about half the price but that’s not really the point.
I'm not sure I get the point. The steak would have to hop out of the box into the pan & cook itself to perfection at that price. I could understand buying food to cook at home where it has been prepared by the restaurant & your job is to slam it in the oven for a while. But steaks or burgers or similar.... Naah don't get it at that price. Each to his own though.
You spend more than that per person when dining in so I suspect many of the regular clientel missing the place won't really care or register the cost in the same way plebs on the internet would.

It's vegan, no wonder it was disappointing.

But surely the price is for the experience, the ambiance, the setting, none of which you will get at your dining table at home. Just not getting the whole deal, get slightly distracted at the wrong time and you will have burnt your steak and chips.

The wine adds nothing, I know a bit about wines and would pick one I like that goes well with Steak. At the beginning of lockdown in March I started a long road of perfecting a Vodka Martini and am now au fait at making one. That then just leaves Mac 'n' Cheese and Creamed Spinach.

Got a go a long way to beat this Mac - https://www.delish.com/cooking/a907/guy-fieri-mac-...

I think the point is those with zero interest in cooking and wine can knock up a half decent meal following an "idiot's guide"

I'd say a key aspect for us that might not be of relevance if you're not local is the support of the business itself.

Eating out is one of our main pleasures in life and something that makes London-living worth it. If paying a premium on meals at home that we could arguably self-source means that we can then return to the ambience, service, et al in x months/years' time then it's a price we're willing to absorb to keep that team/premise/company alive.
I had the same internal argument with takeaway beers from pubs during Summer - it pained me a bit to pay ~150% of the price vs buying from a bottle shop but if it means that there's a chance of having a beer-garden experience in 21/22 then so be it.

I appreciate this may come across a bit wky especially for those struggling financially at the moment.

I agree with you, Hawksmoor was/is one of my faves for client lunching, so I'd be devastated if they closed their doors, so the more people buying their home kits the better. But I do also fully accept it's a lot of money to pay for a home meal, so don't blame people for scoffing at the price.

We had a Moroccan-themed box from them a few months ago and it was OK. We've got the Japanese one being delivered today, so will give that a go to see if it's any better.

Would love to know how that goes - our son is mad on everything Japanese!

As my partner and i don't drink it isn't as expensive for us and aside from holidays and our dog eating out is one of favorite past times. we both have enjoyed the Hawksmoor and we sit as more of a way to support but also get a nice meal. I think we will do it for valentines day just because it falls on a sunday and we won't be out of lockdown by then.

During the first lockdown, I ordered the Mac Daddy kit from Dirty Bones. It was pretty accurate to what they serve in the restaurant and quite good, however, I only got it because they had a 50% discount running. Personally feel the full price is overpriced for what you get.

Totally, some local restaurants [now on plan K] have done the takeaway and/or meal-box option and I'd happily eat for the same price as a night out even if cooking it myself. Some has been a bit ropey, some has been excellent but the important thing is the money is circulating locally. I'm very lucky to have been unaffected work-wise, but 'paying it forward' has been a big theme this year. My son is a chef so biased of course.

We had a box from Northcote - not much cooking just reheating but it was excellent and good size portions.
I spoke to Nigel the owners and he said they are flat out doing them and sell out within a few hours of the boxes going online.
They are only doing 350 boxes a week.

Red, I concur the food boxes from Northcote are fantastic and great value. Just one slight pedantic point, neither Nigel or Craig own the business any longer, it is owned by Britannia Hospitality Limited.

I'm considering one for my daughters birthday. Current thinking is Northcote, Six by Nico or Hawksmoor. Is the Hawksmoor steak pre seared or just raw? The whole thing for me eating steak in a restaurant is the sear/BBQ taste which I struggle to replicate at home. The problem with Northcote is that they all have a fish course and none of my family eat fish. Six by Nico was excellent when we were in Glasgow last February. Their Manchester outfit is doing a 4 course box which seems reasonably priced.

Thanks for posting that link - I love Stein and his recipes and was considering one of the boxes but as we’re a coeliac house (OH) we wouldn’t be able to have any of them. I find it a bit shocking that these days they don’t have any GF options.

We did however have a fabulous box from https://berenjakbazaar.com/collections/meal-boxes (had to sub my own flatbreads and houmous to make it gf) but everything else was accessible. Was absolutely delicious and would recommend.

I must admit I am half with the posters on the Hawkesmoor offering. Would prefer to send sort of thing as a gift to a mate.

Steak & Chips and Mac n cheese are not exactly “tough” to get up to snuff with good ingredients. Who can’t wilt spinach, cook chips or cook a steak? For me it is more a case of willingly supporting a business that may fall victim, or sending something nice off as a gesture. In those terms the premium doesn’t feel misplaced.

However I think doing the SnC boxes for oneself doesn’t make too much sense but appreciate others may have a different view. I just feel the local butcher needs as much appreciation as Hawkesmoor, make hay while the sun shines etc. Likewise if the local pub pub does takeouts, I’ll support that.

However, something like the Simon Rogan at home ones look great. Michelin style dining at home, which is much harder and more time consuming to replicate.

There is also a Beef Wellington place called Mucca which looks superb and not over the odds compared with buying the beef or indeed a prepared welly from elsewhere. Just whack in the oven and done.

I am very tempted with the Rogan ones. A friend did it and I must say it came out looking top end. There is instructional videos that go with it, and the menu changes each week. Has anyone here done one of the slightly higher end ones?

I've a Gymkhana meal coming in a couple of weeks. Love the restaurant and hopefully it tastes as good heated up!

Not the same as being in a restaurant by any means, but a bit of fun 'cooking' Michelin star food at home laugh.

I'll report back in two weeks cool.

Good point about the butcher, hadn’t really crossed my mind in this context. A steak bought from Hawksmoor is a steak not bought from your local butcher.....
