I reckon some places could actually make more cash if they just shut the doors to customers and did delivery only. The Nando’s near me always has more deliveroo riders waiting than customers seated that need waiting on etc.

Probably would.

On the other hand it's good JE has come along as the margins in takeaway were far too large. Bit like black cabs - they were making far too much money for sitting on their arses all day - thank God for Uber giving them a wake up call!

Lots do which is why quite a few deliveroo and just eat options are actually ghost kitchens and not the restaurant themselves making and sending the food. Cheaper to have an industrial unit for delivery volume

Lol

Let me answer a few.

I will NEVER EVER use Amazon, mainly due to reports and friends I know who (briefly) worked there and were treated like rot. And I loath the way they and the general publics laziness (sorry but its true) means the High street is being closed down to probably make way for even more flats to house the massive amount of people we know have to deal with housing, it might be nice in the future but right now I MISS going into town to do as much as i used to. Sorry

I have never ordered a taxi either!

And I miss Blockbuster, I miss searching for SOMETHING and knowing you had to find it or you would have wasted a trip, renting games, going round to mates to play them together, now its all online.

I never do takeaways either so this was merely all about the sums of money involved

Ok, so you miss trecking into town to look for items that may or may not be in stock.

You miss wasting your time trawling through Blockbuster to rent a computer game.

You've never ordered a taxi.

You prefer the human interaction of phoning/collecting takeaways.

Are you lonely?

Never ordered one or never been in one.

Never been on holiday which you have flown to, gone out for a meal with a few drinks and got a cab back to the hotel? No cab from the airport to the hotel?

You have no fking idea how hard and gruelling it is to run a successful takeaway.

It was a tongue-in-cheek comment, in the vein of the thread - you know, people 'knowing' how much business should be allowed to make, and not more. biggrin.

Thank you for your service though beer.

Being brutally honest holidays no, have not been away for 30 years, does not appeal to me in the slightest so never used those apps or needed to. If I go away I might use them to find a deal, then ring direct.

Obviously I am aware of them, see plenty using them, I just choose not to use them I am afraid, I do not like the way these short fuse/minimal employee/based in Luxembourg no tax companies operate and this thread, though balanced in view shows why. Same reason why I never use Amazon, obviously you have to sometimes use some kind of online shop at times, but i prefer to deal personally with shops and people.

Been in loads of taxis yes but never ordered one, and also never even paid a penny to Camelot for lottery tickets.

couldn't care less if I am old fashioned, I have never used a credit card either, this is starting to become tiresome in many ways, but being treated like a leper because I can look after my money is also tiresome.

TLDR - man unlike 99% of people can't see why 99% of people don't see the things the way he does.

You sound like my mum, complete rejection of modern things even it they would be beneficial to her. As she does not drive at night its difficult to pick up a take away, she can't order it on an app as she refuses to use a smart phone, although she does take holidays.

Maybe what you need is a debit card not a credit card. I have not used a credit card for a number of years but I use my debit card constantly to pay for thing using contactless, using public transport, online ect. Even if I rang my takeaway and went to pick it up I can still pay with the debit card.

I think it was actually money well spent yes. They also charted the song I think too?

Anyway, as I said on page 1, places will put prices up for delivery as per Cotty's link. Do we care? No. Will we pay it to save going there? Yes. Do most places around where I live have their own delivery drivers? No.

Ive just been talking to Just Eat as if i was a restaurant wanting to sign up with them and its changed my view a bit. The opening post here that says its 30% commission for delivery and 15% commission for pick up is wrong for a start.

You pay a joining fee of £295 which you dont pay upfront they take it back out of your sales over the first three months
Commission, regardless of what the customer does is 14%
The driver service is optional if its available in your area and completely paid for out of the delivery fee charged on top of the food.

They have a number of services that members can use for free -

A process to help you get through your hygiene rating with the best possible score
A process to help you get your business rates as low as possible
Cashback offers with big suppliers to reduce your input costs
A special energy deal to save customers on average 15% on their utilities and phone and internet costs
Free legal advice on anything to do with running your business
Free HR templates and legal advice to make hiring, managing, paying and firing people easier, more efficient and legally safe
Special deal with a card payments provider to make your overall digital POS more cost effective
Discount deal on packaging that may save you money
Special deal for the purchase of delivery vehicles
Money back on your oil recycliing
Free photoshoot of your top 8 dishes as they have data that shows if customers can see the dish they order it more

There are then additional advertising packages to get yourself to the top of the list as promoted etc
Legal help for dealing with reviews on the platform and on tripadvisor etc

They also have a comprehensive Covid-19 support process keeping clients up to date with what the restrictions are, providing forms and other processes to make sure places are compliant, help with claiming furlough or any other grants that may be available and discounts on PPE and other stuff

I can see how it could make running your business a damn sight easier. They have loads of data on savings etc and could show off the cuff that your average city based "indian" take away in the example would save £13000 a year being a member from the perks. I guess that means in reality for the first £93000 of your turnover each year the just eat commission doesnt really impact you. Taking that into account the overall cost of the JE commission is probably around 7% or less across the whole turnover of an average establishment.

Interesting

Err

So the bloke on the radio who owned three restaurants and used just eat was wrong was he?

I somehow doubt it, maybe he had a different deal to the one you asked about.
