Red Lobster, and other American eateries
Discussion
Went to Florida as a family in the early 2000s. We absolutely loved Olive Garden, IHOP, Dennies, Cheesecake Factory, etc as they were such a novelty. Now having been a few times (and a little older) I'm not so keen now but do still have a breakfast in the dinners when over there.
Love In and Out, can't beat it for the money. Drove from Seattle to LA and stopped at the first one and last on the way home.

Per someone else in this thread, I live in the US and have done for 7 years,.,.
All of the places mentioned so far are low-quality / profit-driven / minimum wage chains.. dreadful.
In pretty much any city in the country, you can find independent or small chain local places serving quality food across the entire price spectrum.
Imagine being a Yank and being told to go to Harvester and Nandos.

Of course, that is the case but as I said, going to a diner is a novelty for a Brit. All of the places mentioned so far are low-quality / profit-driven / minimum wage chains.. dreadful.

I'm pretty well travelled in the states now, don't go to those places anymore but they are easier to describe than Gus Fried Chicken in Memphis or Uncle Bo's in Honolulu for example.

I always make an effort to do that in the US, asking for recommendations etc. Particularly in popular places that don't do reservations I've been aware of local people being looked after and we've been ignored. I don't mind to a certain extent, but a couple of times it's been extreme.I love the American thing of the owner wandering around talking to people.

Joe’s Crab Shack is a small chain but I’ll never forget the Bucket of Crab that I used to order whenever I went. One of each - Snow crab, Spider crab and King crab with plenty of corn on the cob and baked potatoes in there too. Shrimp thrown over the top and all lavishly drenched in garlic butter. Served in an actual full-sized steel bucket.
Mmmmmmmm!!!!

If you're in smaller towns, restaurants like Applebees and Denny's are sometimes the only places you can eat after 8pm! I spent much of the 2000s visiting American call centres in the middle of nowhere, so saying till the evening shift went home I really needed a decent-ish burger and beer at a reliable chain.
Meanwhile, as a random addition to the thread, one of my favourite chains is Phillips Seafood on the east coast. Their crab pretzels are perfect travel food.

What is Chillies like? Never been but the name has cropped up in movies.
It's a chain but they do an fantastic mixed meat plate, I think the food is alright, good meat - nothing like you'd get in parts of Texas but then that's a long way for me.Kind of place you can go with young kids and not worry about what you're wearing etc.
Colarado House of Beef in Florida is good, good thick rib eyes, bloody as hell if you want it and great sides, I remember a garlic butter portobello went down nicely, onion rings fries, all good. Beware of the expensive coxktails.
Dennys showed great hospitality bringing extra fresh eggs, bacon and hash browns.
KFC In Grand Cayman is the best KFC I've ever had, if say you were in a group of 4 you get a big box of French fries, much better than the silly paper bags you have in the UK and being able to mix up spicy or KFC original, dry and crunchy as well.

I am definitely finding a Waffle House on my next trip Stateside (if global travel is ever allowed again).
It looks gloriously dreadful.
