Couldn't find a thread dedicated to one of my best pals.....white wine.

I will kick off with a couple of mid-range whites that I picked up today.

I have had the Chablis before, the stelly is a new one to me but I have high hopes for it and I will be drinking it this evening.

This is from Tesco. Very nice on its own, probably matches well with seafood too.

Where did you get the Collett from? I’ve visited their vineyard a couple of times over the years and brought a good few cases home. Never seen it on sale in the UK though so would love to find a source as there’s only one bottle left of their delightful butteaux in the cellar.

It was acquired in the always magnificent ad-hoc wines, 28 edge street, Manchester.

The people that run it are friendly wine fiends and I am sure they would be more than happy to help.

I'm a big fan of English Whites and after seeing it featured on a recent Hairy Bikers episode I ordered a case of wine from Laurel Vines in North Yorkshire (the Angevine one):

https://laurel-vines.co.uk/

It's really very good and also extremely reasonable at £9 a bottle - reminds me of Sancerre

I'm not sure describing Premier Cru Chablis as mid-range is entirely accurate. I have only had J.Collet at source (and the Hostellerie De Clos for that matter) but Prem Cru Chablis its getting pricey these days £25 + everywhere I buy these days.

But re; the South African Chenin - Loving Tesco's Bellingham old Vine Chenin Blanc which at £11 is frankly stupendous value.

And although I've not tried the one mentioned above , I've never had a Petit Chablis that didn't make we want to spend a few more quid on at least a village Chab.

Sadly, the upper price tier is now £50+ even from the specialists. As with anything, a well chosen £25 bottle of white will knock your socks off and £50 is diminishing returns smile

I am too afraid to get into that section of the shop but if I become weak and do pick up a couple out of that section I will review here.

Depends on which region you’re buying from. A decent GC Riesling with some age on it, or some of the top white Rhône’s will cost much less than their Burgundian peers and can be really special, but will be in the £50+ bracket. There’s no argument though that there are indeed some good wines sub £25.

Got through a couple of cases of Catena Alta Historic Rows Chardonnay in the past year or so, which went down well with everyone who drank it.
Most recent surprise, Ogier’s Viognier de Rosine (about £15). The ‘19 seems to be sold out but plan to pick up some ‘20’s (both great years in the Rhone). Should have bought more than 6 of them.

In the glass right now, 2005 Doisy Vedrines (Sauternes) as a midweek treat. Not at the level of the top wines from that vintage but a solid effort and a good way to end the day.

I live a few miles from Stevenage so a visit to The Wine Society Cellar always a treat. and a bit of bottle fondling (ooh err) in the vintage room. Always some amazing bottles in there but special occasion stuff only for me these days.

Agree about the Rhone ,and the Languedoc as well, offering proper value.
But I'd say Spain and South Africa are where the real bargains are these days

Rarely go north of £20 on white wine but make an exception for Domaine de la Bongran Viré-Clessé.

I find it massive and complex with everything I want from a big white Burgundy at not too stratospheric price

Thanks for these recommendations will check them out

I have drunk both bottles in the OP.

The Chablis was pretty awesome again (although Arsenal tool a pasting whilst I was drinking it).

The Stelly was a bit too strong for me, a rare thing, it was tasty but the alcohol content was too overpowering.

Drank this yesterday, its highly rated due to its low price but the actual taste is serviceable, sulphites are pretty strong for an organic wine as well.

Would definatley take it over other wines at its price level (around a tenner).

After many years of only drinking red I have finally started enjoying white wine. Still can't get on with Sauvignon Blanc or Semillon in table wines but love them in Sauternes.

The best white I have had so far is a 2017 Catena Zapata White Bones. Difficult to get now but I currently have a 2019 White Stones and White Bones cellaring and will buy a couple every year upon release for special occasions.

The best sub £20 bottle I have tried is a 2018 Oremus Mandolás Furmint. Tokaj is probably the most underrated white wine region in the world - along with Jerez.

Nice! I have some of each of those too. Their reds are pretty good as well.

If you’re into Sauternes, do you also dabble with the off drys from Alsace? I rather enjoyed a bottle of Trimbach’s Gewürztraminer “Cuvee des Seigneurs de Ribeaupierre” (2015) over the weekend. Probably only do half a case or so of Gewurtz or Riesling each year but find them perfect in the garden. Trouble is that they tend to be hard to find other than when first released.

Personally not a fan of NZ Sauv Blanc (will sometimes make an exception for Greywacke) but love the odd Pouilly-Fumé. If your only real experience is with the new world ones, perhaps give a french one a try?

The nicest white I had in a while was a Chablis Grand Cru Vaudesir by Thierry Laffay. Was about £50 and was sensational. Love Chablis.

It's the quality of the Catena reds which made me take note of their whites and opened a whole new avenue of discovery - prior to that the only dry whites I consistently enjoyed were Champagnes. If you like Catena Zapata I would recommend Bodegas Aleanna, which is owned by Adrianna Catena and whose wines are wonderful.

The only sweet wines I have tried so far have been Sauternes, Tokaji, Pedro Ximenex and of course Port. I do have a bottle of some German dessert wine (no idea what it's called) but have yet to try it. One of the wine bars my girlfriend and I frequent has an adjoining wine shop, which is always dangerous to visit after a glass or two. smile The salesman saw me looking (and saw me coming I think) at the dessert wines and recommended it saying one of his customers puts it on a similar level to Yquem and buys it whenever it comes in. Needless to say, at 30 a bottle and having just polished off a bottle of Pinot Noir, it seemed a shrewd investment. We shall see.

I will look out for a Pouilly-Fume based on your recommendation. beer
