Price of Fish & Chips - How Much?!?
Discussion
£19.50 for haddock, chips and mushy peas at the Founder's Arms on the South Bank near the Tate Modern. Chips supposedly triple-cooked but taste and texture no better than Wetherspoons, I thought. Peas almost cold and the smallest portion I've ever seen, served in a sauce pot about the size of a teaspoon. Fish was ok but overall I've had much better fish & chips at other pubs, let alone at actual fish & chip shops. Tourist price gouging, I suppose.

Well, the prices seem to be quite clear on the menu. Surely there is a Wetherspoons nearby where you could have gone for good value food and drink?https://www.foundersarms.co.uk/food-drink/main-men...

£35 for two medium cod and chips, one children’s cod bites and chips, two cans of coke and one curry sauce. Is this expensive? South east.
To me yesA small fish special is £5.90 in our local chip shop and a large fish and chips is £7.30.
Same order here would be about £23 (Chester)
Amazed at some of the prices posted here even accounting for the rise in the cost of living. Had this lot from Monmouth (most things are expensive there) I live in Usk another quite affluent town that has it's own chippy but it's crap. Wifey works in Monmouth so picked this up from my favourite chippy ..........
My cod was too big for the plate and had nice chunky flakes. Wifey's naan kebab was stupidly large but she scoffed the lot along with the rest of my chips!
The sausages were for the dogs so that's 4 quid of the bill which was........

£8.07 for large cod & chips, including a 660ml bottle of Peroni, that sells for £3.99 in 'spoons and about £5-6 elsewhere. On a plate, delivered to your table, piping hot. Actually looked just like the picture (except I had the mushy peas), including the hideous patterned plate. Unbelievable value. Take off the Peroni and it was £4.08. Take off what you pay for a large Peroni elsewhere and it was £2.07.

The 660 ml Peroni actually sells for £4.50, so the fish and chips is costing you £3.57. Edited by TwigtheWonderkid on Monday 17th July 20:17

Interesting long article in The Guardian today about the challenges facing the fish & chip trade: https://www.theguardian.com/food/2023/jul/20/a-fun...

Fish and chips in any pub is never as good as a good chippy
It was very good. Was it the best I've ever had, no. But it was easily on a par with normal fish and chips from a chippy. Doesn’t help that my local sit down chippy is £14 without any kind of drink that isn’t tap water.
