Fish, Chips & peas: £30.
But that was about five years ago on the Portland Bill to Weymouth Rd.
Only a small shack...but emblazoned with RICK STEIN’s name.
Luckily it was closed.
as per the other thread this is also fictitious. But that was about five years ago on the Portland Bill to Weymouth Rd.

- and its gone from restaurant to small shack, and none of his places are emblazoned with his name, its fairly subtle. F&C in the seafood is 25 quid now - not cheap but.... So 30 quid in some offshoot shack, that never have seemed to exist, unless the poster means the sandbanks restaurant (which is cheaper that the seafood anyway...)

Medium haddock (8.60) (quite big really) and large chips (4.45) (loads of nice soggy chip shop chips) from churchills chain in essex yesterday (purchased for my old man as i was passing) pricey but usually pretty good.
Oddly i found myself in aldeburgh today on an errand and having commented on the tourist trap f&c shop(s) there in the beef dripping thread, no queue and hunger led us to try it again small haddock dry, overcooked, soggy batter (5.50), scampi, average, (5.00), cod roe, small roundel, nice (0.80) rock eel, awful, tiny portion and overcooked (5.50), chips ok bit dry not many (2.50). so for a very modest portion of f&c it would be 8 quid, which is not actually too bad given its a tourist trap and catering to wealth typically (given the demographics of the town and visitors). Its still bang average at best imo, but surprisingly cheap compared to the usual in essex.
our other local, becks near carbis bay, is probably in the middle of the 2 but i always find it greasy - i know they charge nearly 3 quid for cod roe though which is a p take.

sorry not sure what your saying...maybe phone reading from an addled brain waiting for the one next to me to stop reading and turn the light out but am i missing the point or are you agreeing with mine!?my point is there has never been a steins in the location mentioned (as far as i'm aware) and rs doesnt charge 30 quid even in the seafood so seems odd it would be 30 quid not even in the flagship, in a mystery location, 5 years ago, thus the poster is talking bllx or was mistaken. massively.
anyway off to sleep now!

Interesting long article in The Guardian today about the challenges facing the fish & chip trade: https://www.theguardian.com/food/2023/jul/20/a-fun...
That was very interesting. I guess maybe fish and chips are having a bit of a perfect storm of specifically troubled increased ingredients prices, increased high energy prices, and reduced consumer spending for what used to be seen as a relatively cheap treat. If your cheap treat is no longer cheap, your whole selling point is a bit screwed.
I’m sure conditions will return to make it profitable again, but by then all the historical family run places will have folded.

Might have been featured on one of his shows... and said..
as seen on
RICK STEIN ?
His name was definitely displayed... because both me & my then GF remarked about it & then it clicked, regarding the ridiculous price.as seen on
RICK STEIN ?
Another shop in Weymouth was visited by him, praised & got a mention in a book of his.
Maybe this place, just went a bit too far... being nr Chesil beach.
Nicely presented tables, crockery & cutlery etc.
Perhaps it’s no longer there...
Or was it another Rick Stein.

Went to get a piece of fish, two battered sausage and a can of drink last night (no chips) and it came to £10.75 (this is near Hythe, Southampton)
Turns out they wouldn't take card payment (only had my phone with me), it was cash only. Saved myself £10.75. I wasn't unhappy with not being able to get them, at that price!
