Should I invest in wine?

I'm quite keen to buy a case of Ch. Margaux 2008. Basically because it was the year my brothers son was born and I thought it would make an excellent 21st birthday present. Any word on the grapevine as to possible price yet Bebs?
Not yet mate - the 08 en-primeurs will not be released until summer this year. We're tasting them in early April and they are released a couple of months later.escargot said:
Cheers mate. Do you have any professional opinion or a ballpark? Given that it looked like being a more 'modest' vintage, are we looking at a few hundred quid a bottle? PM if you prefer
It really depends how greedy the Chateaux and negociants decide to be.. bearing in mind the 07 was a rubbish vintage I suspect they'll want to hike it up.. but a couple of hundred to 250 a bottle prob not far off the mark..Bebs said:

I'm not really up on the 2008 vintages. Where in France did have a good year?
I guess we all have our reasons for "investing" but it's best to do it in something you know about.Parting with any kind of wedge on the basis of what's said on a motoring web-site might just contain an element of risk. But it's your money.....

Couldn't agree more, although the beauty of PH is the breadth of people you find on here.Parting with any kind of wedge on the basis of what's said on a motoring web-site might just contain an element of risk. But it's your money.....
As for taking advice, you could do a lot worse than listen to Bebs. I've bought a lot of stuff from Brian (Bebs), most recently including 9 cases of 2005 Bordeaux. He has 20 odd years working for Christies wine auctioneers and now works through his own show. You can make your own mind up on what you think is good or bad or otherwise (read the reviews), but he definitely knows a thing or two about wine, including pointers on little known labels which offer superb drinking for a fraction of the Grand Cru cost.
He's also a decent bloke. The downside is, he will also try and convince you to buy a Ferrari. I caved and became instantly destitute, but am drinking my sorrows away in style
