hehe

I went to a sit-down auction at my local mart last year but didn't take any cards with me, just £300 cash. I could easily have spent a few grand! eek

Well, I did get a nice surprise today.

Way back this time last year...I mentioned to son and daughter "if you see a bottle of XXXXX , you know what to get me for Birthday or Xmas"

I'd seen "XXXX" mentioned , on here I think , and it roused my curiosity.

Little did I realise how difficult to get it could be. Over the time I managed to forget totally about my request.

I underestimated the resolve of them both....and the people they enlisted to help.

So fast forward to the past few days...." Got you a pressie" announces daughter a few days back.

Totally puzzled as to what was coming.......I found out today!

I'm hoping I like it....Do I recall it's thought to be young Laphroaig? Plus seaweed? biggrin

Cooler weather coming..so the G and T's and Tequila's back in the cupboard. This will be begging to be opened. drink

Sounds interesting though.

Just got back from a trip to China and managed to grab a bottle of Ardbeg in duty free for £31, which I thought was good value. Only realised it was a litre (not 70cl) when I got home so a real bargain smile

With the mini-collection

Tried it and enjoyed it (certainly packs a smokey/peaty punch) but not sure it's going to overtake the laphroig as my favourite just yet smile

Also enjoyed a few others from my brother's collection whilst over there:

Monkey shoulder - Finally had this, very quaffable - complex though not convinced I could pick many of the flavours out. Great value though.
Yamazaki 12yo - Loved this, so smooth, so fruity and light. Really very nice.
Red breast 12yo - Really enjoyed this as well. Quite zingy, light, sweet and fruity compared to many scottish whiskys.

Just returned from Singapore Changi Airport. They have got a bottle of 62 yr old Dalmore for sale @ $250,000 (£125,000)
Bottled was named 'Drew Sinclair' and is one of the twelve feature in this Daily Telegraph press article in 2005

Quote
"A hotel guest has bought a bottle of whisky for £32,000 and drunk it in one night.

The anonymous regular at the Pennyhill Park Hotel in Bagshot, Surrey, was joined by a group of friends who helped him put away the world's most expensive single malt in the oak-panelled surroundings of the establishment's Ascot bar.

The bottle, a Dalmore 62-year-old malt, was produced by the tiny Scottish distillery at Alness, Ross-shire, 20 miles north of Inverness, three years ago.

The distillery combined casks of malt from 1868, 1878, 1926 and 1939 to make the single malt, making the youngest of the ingredients 62 years old when bottled.

The bottle, drunk late one evening in Surrey last month, is believed to be the only one of 12 to have been opened. One remains at the distillery and the others were sold to private collectors.

The hotel bought the bottle little expecting it to be drunk. David Broadhead, the general manager, would not reveal the identity of the middle-aged buyer, thought to be from Berkshire, but described him as a "regular hotel guest and a private collector of fine spirits".

He added: "He's got the bottle and he's got the presentation case, so at least it's on his shelf as a memento."

Denis Barthe, who looks after the hotel's VIP guests and was offered a taste by the customer, said it was "exquisite" and added that the customer "has the philosophy that there's no point in buying these fine whiskies and never drinking them".

A bottle of the Dalmore 62 sold at auction in Glasgow for £25,877.50 in December 2002, just after it was bottled, beating the previous record of £20,000 for a single malt.

The hotel bought its bottle from dealers for around £31,000, making the across-the-bar price a world record.

It was finished in an Oloroso Matusalem Sherry butt from Gonzalez Byass, Spain, and bottled at natural cask strength of 40.5 per cent volume.

Each of the 12 bottles is named after different characters and events in the distillery's history. The one that was drunk was called the "Matheson", after Alexander Matheson, who founded the distillery on the shore of the Cromarty Firth in 1839.

The distillery's master blender, Richard Paterson, said he was pleased the bottle had been "opened, shared and enjoyed".

His tasting notes describe the whisky as refined and elegant and add: "The true beauty of this unique single malt is unsurpassed.

"It must therefore be given total respect and sufficient time to fully open and reveal its many mysteries. The palate must be prepared - the time must be right. This indeed will be a memorable occasion."

Drew Sinclair, 62, the manager of the Dalmore distillery, said yesterday: "It is absolutely fantastic. I have worked at Dalmore for 40 years, so I have looked after this whisky for more than half its life.

"You want to savour it, so it's no use getting drunk and forgetting what it tastes like."

Like expensive cars, these things should be enjoyed.

Smokehead
Caol Isla Cask Strength
Bowmore 2000 8 year old

Not a bad trio on a sensible budget, but with hindsight I really should have bought a Corryvreckan and an Octomore as well (but Mrs BG was in the store too, and might have squeaked a bit at the cost).

bounce Hooray, someone else to give a view on this little beauty.

It is of Laphroaig breeding, and packs a punch being at cask strength, then with the added whiff of salt and sea brought to the fore by the sprig of Celp in the bottle... It taints the colour slightly green in the glass which is always handy for those blind tastings wink

Anyway - its a cracker in my view, still widely available through the Dutch suppliers that I normally use, and a constant one in my collection. Definate 4/5, maybe even a 5 lick

All I have is a bottle of Jura Superstition.

Graduating soon, which I think means a bottle of Blackadder Raw Cask Tomatin 17 year and a nice big cigar.

Can somebody offer some help.

I have been enjoying the Dalwhinnie 1990 Oloroso Finish - Distillers Edition and Dalmore 15 Year Old but have not found anything else like these two bottles.

Does anyone have anything to offer or info on another bottle like either of these?

Really? Do you normally enjoy islay whisky? I absolutely love Corrvyreckan, it's one of my favourite Ardbegs.

Just as well we all like different stuff, otherwise whisky would all taste the same!

You seem to be gravitating towards the heavily sherried stuff...

Glendronach? Full maturation rather just finishing in sherry casks cloud9
