I'm VERY sadly nearing the end of a bottle of Waitrose 'own brand' Whiskey. It's a 1981 distilled, 21 yr old single speyside that's been matured in port pipes.
It is bloody gorgeous, and I want to try and find if it exists in a 'branded' bottle.
It was bottled by WM Maxwell Ltd of Broxburn. I wondered if anyone had heard of these guys, or if they're linked to a distillery? Is the port pipes a signature of a particular brand?
I'd be very grateful for any leads you can provide, as I've not found any other whisky that comes close so far!
No idea if this is of any use, but a quick Google turned up:It is bloody gorgeous, and I want to try and find if it exists in a 'branded' bottle.

I found this:

Definitely the whisky that I've got, so the trail is getting warmer!
Looks like it might be produced by these guys:

I'm up in the highlands in a couple of weeks, so will try and make a visit!
A quick google threw up this, which may be relevant - it's potentially Glenfarclas:

While this may a good indication, you would really have to speak to someone in the know, or compare side-by-side to know for sure unless there's something that gives it away on the label. These are probably some of the many casks that go to independents with strings attached, e.g. can't put the distillery name on it.
One of the best I've had was a 10yr old Safeway Lowland Malt which was only finished off recently, but bought years ago, that was clearly Rosebank - the distillery wasn't named, but it was only one of two that triple distilled and I had other bottles of the stuff.
Like they say in the thread, the fact it's a supermarket malt doesn't mean it's a bad whisky, and there's every chance of stumbling on a really good one..

Anyone looking for a bargain dram might want to head to Sainsburys! Their Taste the Difference Highland single malt has won the IWSC prize this year for Best Single Malt Scotch Whisky (no age statement). Not bad for £20 a bottle!

Just picked this up, lets see what it's about!More here
I just picked up a bottle. It's down to £18 now.
A bargain if it's as good as they say.
Will report back later, might pop it open later today.

when I get whisky for myself, it is very easy! For other people on the other hand ...
I need to get a colleague a bottle of whisky, budget is about £100, but I have no idea of his tastes, other than he loved the Dewars Signature that I got him a while ago.
I suppose I want the gift to be something a bit different, but want to play it safe, so no Islays on this one!
Thoughts?

If you can spend a further 8 quid, this is a cracking dram https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/glenfarclas-...I need to get a colleague a bottle of whisky, budget is about £100, but I have no idea of his tastes, other than he loved the Dewars Signature that I got him a while ago.

Maybe an Auchentoshan Three Wood? It's a very smooth whiskey with a little bit of fire to remind you it's a spirit, but mostly it's a great flavour. Tastes a bit like liquid whiskey toffee. In fact the only reason I don't buy it more often is that I could comfortably drink the whole bottle, which would leave me feeling jaded fir a day or two. You can get it from Tescos for £46 a bottle: http://www.tesco.com/groceries/product/details/?id...

I'm looking for a good bottle circa £50 as a gift to my brother in law. I don't think he is a regular whisky drinker, so nothing too challenging, just something he can open on one of his boys nights? Any recommendations?
Personally I'd give him a bottle of Aberlour A'bunadh. (I'm assuming you want to keep away from Islay peated/smoky malts).I use that on all my tasting evenings, and when people rank the whisky's of the night (and we sample quite a few), it always comes out as the favourite, and even the highest rated by the non-regular whisky drinkers.
You can get it for about £41.50 at Waitrose.
It's usually about 59.6% proof, as well, so it requires a little water to open it up and take some of the alcohol sting away. Compared to a 40% that's like a bottle and a half.
Still one of my all time favourites.
My current cupboard contents
Need to get an order in for some more Scapa 16yo and more Glenlivet 15yo french oak miniatures. The miniatures go down a storm when travelling with work as gifts for foreign colleagues.
As a fairly new Whisky drinker I'm mainly into my Speyside malts although i'm sure my tastes will change over the years.

I have just inherited a nice pair of cut glass decanters.
They were presented to my great grandfather in 1971.
I think they must be lead crystal. When I flick it with my finger they ring.
Now; question: Will I poison myself by storing whisky in there?
I've heard that the lead dissolves in the alcohol???
