strawberries chopped into small pieces
rind of half a lime

mix

stick in ice cream maker for 20 minutes

embarrisingly simple, tastes divine

What does an ice cream maker add to this process?

For example, could I simply mix the ingredients together then whack the lot in a freezer?

yes but stir it every twenty minutes or so to prevent it from forming large ice crystals and going rock - ard!

Ahh, so I assume an ice cream machine does that for you?

yeah its basically just a chilled churning machine. freezes and churns the mixture at the same time. i must add though its difficult to get good results from the old fashioned freezer method unless your very patient and churn your ice cream on a very regular basis!
