So, totting that up, maybe 800/900g of food? Too much for me alone, but it doesn't sound a lot for a family of four, in truth.

Pretty sure you could get the cost down, too, using normal rice and some chook stock...

It does look nice. And, I'm not really a fan of peppers.

add the 800ml of water, some of which will evaporate, I'm sure you'll get closer to 1.5kg

I do a similar thing but marinate the prawns in sweet chilli sauce first, and chuck in a tin of drained chopped tomatoes and some chopped spring onions. Cook the rice seperately and throw it all in and let it simmer for a bit until the prawns are pink.
Omit the peppers and you have a ruddy tasty, quick meal on the cheap.

Have just picked up the ingredients for this, not sure whether I'm a snob (nearly got TTD prawns instead) or a cheapskate (72p for a pepper? If I could be bothered to go to the market...). But mainly I want to say:

shout Oi! Sainsbury's! Put the fking rice in the aisle that's got the fking 'Rice' sign over it. It's grocery shopping not the fking Krypton Factor.

That's better. smile

I gave up looking for the rice they suggested, then remembered I already had some Paella rice so just used that.

quick tip, they sell peeled frozen uncooked prawns cheaper than they do at the counter (the counter ones are frozen too)

much nicer than the pre cooked plus you can de-vain them

Two aisles over, that's why. Must some reason known only to Sainsbury's why this particular rice is excluded from the rice section.

Anyway, wasn't bad for what it was. Only fed a family of 1, although I am thinking that perhaps I didn't really need to eat all of it. Mind you, I used to frequent Spanish restaurants in NYC where the paella for one would dwarf that quantity.

Also, in Tesco, raw frozen king prawns are on offer from £5 to £2.25 a pack.

Almost as cheap as the rubbish little pink things in the chilled aisle.
I have 5 packs of these in the freezer at the moment...
