Looking to have a special day with the GF, so something romantic near Hampton Court would be ideal. Would like to break up day with a good meal.

If any of you have any suggestions of what can do besides the touristy stuff around there, that would be welcome too!

Can't recommend a hostelry, but whatever you do don't drive... The traffic is abysmal frown

My choice would be Edwinns in Shepperton. Consistently great food, and reasonably priced.

I live on the border of Hampton Wick and Teddington. Don't want to rain on your parade, but I wouldn't recommend the Anglers to anybody. The Auberge on the High Street is vastly overpriced for what it is IMHO, and I've never had a good meal in there, or its little brother across the road, the Petite Auberge. If you want 'Poncy', it ticks all the boxes though.

If you want somewhere with a nice view, you could try The Wharf, http://www.thewharfteddington.co.uk/ which is situated more or less next to the Anglers at Teddington Lock. If you like Indian food with a twist, you could always try The Orchid, which is in High Street, Hampton Wick. TBH though I can't think of any really good restaurants around here, well at least on this side of the river.

If you just want a beer somewhere near the Flower Show that is far enough away not to be rammed, but near enough to get to, my local is the Lion in Wick Road. If you see a bloke in there with a Springer called Magic, that'll be me!

Why would you not recomend the Anglers?

Another non-vote for the Anglers. Fine for a pint and a burger, but not good enough to warrant a recommendation.

Albany is a good setting, but I've not eaten there since just after it changed hands (Fox on the Water, was it?) - definitely more gastro pub than the Anglers though!

Auberge (Teddington) is good value for the fixed price lunch, but expensive otherwise.

How about Retro Teddington), opposite side of teh road to Auberge - 'conservative' portion sizes wink , but good food (I think some ex-Monsieur Max staff?)

Thames Court food is above average pub fayre, but service struggles when they are busy!

Regarding the French Table in Surbiton, that was just tipped in Olive magazine (June issue I think), so might be worth seeking out. Gastro pub in that area, how about The Gordon Bennett?

How near Hampton Court do you want to be?

ETA: Traffic is terrible at the moment due to the flower show...quite bearable at other times outside of rush hour.

It's got two kinds of clientele. It's either full of families with screaming kids, or it's full of 'Yoofs'. It used to be famous round here for being where all the under age drinkers went, but they have (had to?) cleaned up their act a bit. The average age of the punter in there now is still on the youthful side. As a direct result, unless you drink lager that all tastes the same wherever you go, you tend to get a crap pint.

The Tide End next door is better for beer. We're a bit short on decent pubs round here now. The White Hart was done up a few years ago, and it's now horrible. The Foresters has been converted from a decent pub with good beer into a GastroPub staffed by eighteen year old bints with their chests hanging out and no concept of what they are doing. The Railway has gone bust again, and The Swan, which a few years ago was a wonderful pub, has got its fifth new landlord in as many years, and it is suffering from an identity crisis, which is a shame as I like Shepherd and Neame. That leaves The Lion, which used to win CAMRA prizes under its previous landlord, where I go now. All IMHO of course. YMMV.

This is definitely a thread of differences, I quite like the anglers and think that thames court is a dump with crap food, We went to Edwins the other night and our CEO thought it was (and it was) the worse place ever.

Think the OP will need to stick a pin in the phone book! wobble

Blubeckers is pretty nice and directly opposite Hampton Court. Can't ever recall having a bad meal there.

The Wharf is mainly a fish restaurant and is not far from Teddington Lock and the home of PH (Teddington Studios) and is in a lovely setting.

The Anglers is great for beer but I've eaten there once and haven't eaten there since.

Edwinns in Shepperton is also a great restuarant in my opinion.

Not really my cup of tea but there is also a Cafe Rougé situated in Esher which is roughly a 10 minute drive from Hampton Court.

The Anglers is right next to the PH office, and we walk past it every day to go and eat somewhere else. When I have eaten there I have been less than impressed sadly.
